The end of dynasties in the NFC?

Post by RyanChristiansen »

I heard today on the Locked On Vikings podcast that in the NFC, 64 of the 88 division winners over the past 22 seasons (since the last NFL realignment) were not repeat winners from the year before. Green Bay had 7 of the 24 repeats under Favre then Rodgers.

In the AFC, New England with Brady dominated as repeat winners, and more recently Kansas City with Mahomes has dominated as repeat winners.

When will we see another dynastic run in the NFC? Will a future quarterback be the difference-maker? Is that what it really comes down to?

Well, here in Detroit, we're aiming to fix that. ;)

Since 1998, here's the QBs with multiple NFC Championships:

Kurt Warner 3 (two different teams)
Eli Manning 2
Russell Wilson 2

Rodgers and Brees set gobs of records but only one apiece. Teams that did it in relatively close proximity (Rams, Eagles, 49ers) but changed QBs in between. Sometimes coaches as well. It's been a weird ride certainly.

The 49ers have been one of the top teams since 2019 and have appeared in four NFC Championship games. SB win or not, with their core of players, including Kittle, Warner(multiple All-Pros)Samuel, Aiyuk, Bosa(All-Pro recognition) and Purdy, McCaffrey rejuvenating the team, a possible force for years. Would Trent Williams retire if they won the SB? He may have some years left as well.

I've blogged about this a few times - it's more the domination of QBs. Going back to the year 2000 or so, you'd be hard pressed to find an NFC Championship Game without McNabb, Rogers, Manning, Wilson, Brees, Garrapollo, Goff, and now Purdy. There may have been one or two. So that's what - 8 QBs in the last 25 years? AFC it's equally, if not even more pronounced. You think about all the quarterbacks who've been playing since then - and one of those 8 has been in the NFC Championship Game every single year except for maybe 2 or 3. The year 2000 is one of them. And then whatever year the Panthers won the NFC with Newton. But I think it might be every other single year.
