New York Giants 2nd Half Dropouts since 2000

Post by LeonardRachiele »

In the last 20 years, the New York Giants have started with winning streaks but tailed off 13 times. There were only two exceptions. The 2013 saw the Giants with an 0-6 start but a 7-3 finish. It was not enough to save them from a 7-9 season. In 2018, New York started 1-7 but after that was 5-3. They rose to just above average in the second half. This raises questions but I do not know the answers.

-This was the season after the Super Bowl loss to the Baltimore Ravens. The team started 3-1; after that was 4-8. Finished with a 7-9 record.
-Another piece of shattered glass. Average 4-4 start but lost all remaining games to finish 4-12.
-Excellent 5-2 start but a 1-8 finish.
-Excellent 6-2 start with 2-6 finish. Lost to Philadelphia Eagles 23 to 20 in the playoffs. Eagles blew a 20 to 10 lead in the fourth quarter. Reliable David Ackers kicked a 38 yard field goal, his third of the game, on the last play.
-This was the year that the New York Giants defeated the unbeaten New England Patriots in the Super Bowl 17 to 14; but New York still had the late season drop off. They were 6-2 after 8 games but 4-4 thereafter.

-The Giants looked invincible going 11-1 but lost 3 of the last 4 for a 12-4 season. Among those losses was a 20 to 14 game at home to the Philadelphia Eagles. While the Giants had a BYE Week, the Eagles were defeating the Minnesota Vikings 27 to 14. Everything pointed toward a New York victory in the semifinals-the Giants were at home, their season record of 12-4 versus 9-6-1 for the Eagles; and it would be difficult to defeat the Giants twice in their house in a 4 week period. Nevertheless, Philadelphia won 23 to 11. The Giants did not score a touchdown in this game and got just a field goal in the 2nd half. Even considering the 3 Super Bowls, this was the their best game in the post season.
-The Giants had a 5-0 start and a 3-8 record thereafter. Another average 8-8 record.
-Even in their Super Bowl winning year, the New York trailed off in the second half of the season ; a 6-2 start and a 3-5 finish for a 9-7 record; There was a four game losing streak in that finish. But the team got hot at the right time and wound up a Super Bowl Champion.
-As with the previous year, there was a 6-2 start and a 3-5 finish for a 9-7 record. The competition was keener this time and the Giants did not make the playoffs.
-This went against the trend for New York. They lost their first 6 games but went 7-3 thereafter. During this latter period, there was a 4 game winning streak. They still had a losing season of 7-9 but ending strong always gives some optimism for the future.

-Once again, the second half miseries returned. The team had a 3-2 start but a 3-8 finish. The 6-10 record looked bad.
-The team started at 5-4 but went 1-6 thereafter for another 6-10 season.
-The New York Giants had a good 11-5 season. However, they lost in the first round at Green Bay 38 to 13.
-Reversing the trend the Giants started at 1-7 but were 5-3 after that. The 6-10 record made for another dismal year.
-After a 2-2 start, New York was 2-10. A 4-12 season sounds like a broken record.
