If you took away the head to head games and I only had all of the other results to go by I would probably say the Bengals or the Cowboys were the best team in 1981. However the fact that the 49ers beat BOTH of those teams TWICE tells me they were the truly the best team that year. I'm thinking maybe this DVOA is a case of over-anaylsis or something because I do not buy its ratings for either 1981 or 1982 for a second.
