Memorable dropped passes/interceptions

Post by slats7 »

I'm thinking of obvious drops, not Dez in Green Bay or Lee Evans having the ball punched out in New England.

easy ones off the top of my head:

Jackie Smith (SB XIII)
Wes Welker (SB XLVI) - though not an easy catch

Lewis Billups (SB XXIII)
Asante Samuel (SB XLII)

Ronnie Harmon in the 1989 divisional game at Cleveland that would have given Buffalo the lead with nine seconds left.

I have a two part nomination from the first quarter of Super Bowl XX. First, Stanley Morgan drops a sure
touchown following Payton's fumble. Then, after the Patriots settle for a FG, McMahon throws a ball right into Don Blackmon's chest. Blackmon has an easy score, but he drops the ball. The Patriots were hopelessly outmatched, but what happens with a 14-0 lead. Does Berry change his offensive strategy and run the ball the rest of the night? Do the Patriots stop keying on Payton?

Ray Renfro dropped Plum's perfect bomb vs NYG that could have won it for Cleveland & forced a 1961 eastern playoff.

Fred Naumetz of the Rams dropped an allegedly easy INT on the Browns' last drive in the 1950 NFL championship game. I don't know how much a Rams win in the 1950 game would have 'changed history', but it was a big play.

I'm sure the other Packer fans in this forum will remember Yancey Thigpen's drop of a pass that would have given the Steelers a victory over Green Bay in the final game of the 1995 season. Thigpen was wide open in the corner of the end zone and it should have been an easy catch, but somehow it slipped through his fingers. That was a 4th down play and the Packers took over with 11 seconds left.

Incidentally, a couple of players earlier Thigpen had been open in the end zone and Neil O'Donnell missed him badly.

The victory gave the Packers their first division title since 1972 and sent them into the playoffs, where they ended up losing to the Cowboys in the NFC title game.

Dennis Northcutt's third down drop of a Kelly Holcomb pass with 2:35 left in the 2002 WC game. Had he caught it, the Browns would have been able to run out the clock and win what's been their only playoff game since returning. Instead, they had to punt and the Steelers drove down to score the winning touchdown with 58 seconds left.

In the Redskins' 73-0 loss to the Bears, Chicago scored a touchdown on the second play of the game. However, the Skins immediately drove down to the Bears 18 and Sammy Baugh found Charlie Malone in the end zone. However, Malone dropped the pass, Bob Masterson missed the subsequent field goal try and the Bears wnr on for the record-setting rout.

In the 1963 title game at Wrigley, the Giants led 7-0 in the first quarter and almost immediately recovered a Bears fumble at the Chicago 31. On the first play, Y.A. Tittle found Del Shofner in the end zone, but Shofner dropped it. Two plays later, Larry Morris picked off Tittle and took it down to the Giant 5, where the Bears scored to tie the game, eventually winning 14-10.

In Super Bowl X Glen Edwards dropped what would've been a pick 6. The Steelers still won the game. But it may not have been as close.
