Good article about Rams' return to Coliseum

Post by mwald »

Interesting article by SI's Don Banks about the Rams' return to the Coliseum. More a history of the Coliseum itself, what an historic venue it is.

One thing I found interesting: after the last renovation in 1994 Al Davis designed the visitor's locker room to be very unfriendly to the visiting team.

A couple years ago I toured Mile High Stadium in Denver and the visiting locker room there is also designed so that the visiting team cannot all see each other, though not to the extreme that Banks describes the Coliseum.

Most stories about old ballparks are interesting - especially if they are written with some insight and contact
with the "old-timers" who played there or attended the games. This article is no exception and the Davis
excapade brings the old place to life once again. There was a nice story about Kezar last year and an
exceptional review of Rickwood Field - the oldest surviving professional baseball park in the United States.
It was built for the Birmingham Barons in 1910 by industrialist and team-owner Rick Woodward.

We spend a lot of time focusing on players and uniforms and rules and often overlook the fact that they had
to have a place to play.

Nice post about a grand old gal.

Good threads are "catchy" and get attention from many sources.
E-mail today included a message from a good friend in the great state of Washington who shared the attached link about a stadium manager we all remember for other reasons.
At one time, Fort Lewis, Washington, was the home of one of the toughest units in the US Army during WW II -
the 10th Mountain Division. Trained as ski troops, wherever they fought they earned glory well-deserved.
Frank Sargent, former Governor of Massahusetts, always mentioned with great pride his days with the 10th MD.

One more fact about Mile High at Denver: our tour guide told us that Pat Bowlen's private suite had a bookshelf with a book or notch of some sort that, when pulled, triggered a panel that slid open revealing an elevator that took him straight down to field level.

This might not be all that uncommon in newer stadiums, but I thought it was cool in a James Bond sort of way.

If the league was feeling so nostalgic, then why didn't they have Super Bowl 50 at the L.A. Coliseum? And have it be an afternoon game? It would have been the perfect venue to commemorate the 50th World Championship Game.

Because they didn't want the game blacked out in LA because of all the empty seats?

What a grand idea. It would have sold out no problem. But the halftime acts look better at night.

Coincidentally, January 15, 2017, the 50th anniversary of that first Super Sunday, will also fall on a Sunday, so maybe, just maybe, the L.A. Rams will win their division and host a playoff game and almost fill two-thirds of the Coliseum.

And if the Super Bowl gets played in the afternoon again, then "Up With People" works best during the daylight hours.

As a child we sang "Up With People" in music class while our music teacher banged it out on piano. I can still sing that song without missing a lyric.

Sometimes today, when triggered by a smell or a word or a single note, it just comes out. Doesn't matter where I'm at.
