Herber > Hutson to Montana > Rice is at least three, maybe four generations.

Ray Flaherty was head coach at Gonzaga in 1930

Herber to Hutson, late 1930s; Montana to Rice, late 1980s. That's 50 years, which can't be more than two generations. I guess it could be four or five if you're considering the length of a player's career in the NFL, but that's not the general usage, and I'm sure that's not what the writer of that article meant.

One thing, though: He says Herber helped the Packers to the championship in 1930 and '31 by throwing TD passes to Johnny Blood, but Herber didn't play much in 1930 and hardly played at all in 1931. He became the starter in 1932 with the retirement of Red Dunn -- and just in time, because that was the year the NFL started to keep passing stats.
"It was a different game when I played.
When a player made a good play, he didn't jump up and down.
Those kinds of plays were expected."
~ Arnie Weinmeister
