AFL All-Time Team
AFL All-Time Team
Below is the AFL All-Time Team:
QB: Joe Namath, Len Dawson*
RB: Paul Lowe*, Clem Daniels, Abner Haynes, Cookie Gilchrist*
WR: Lance Alworth*, Don Maynard*, Charlie Hennigan, Art Powell
TE: Fred Arbanas*, Dave Kocourek
Tackle: Ron Mix*, Jim Tyrer*, Winston Hill*, Stew Barber
Guard: Billy Shaw*, Ed Budde*, Walt Sweeney*, Bob Talamini
Center: Jim Otto*, Jon Morris
DE: Jerry Mays, Gerry Philbin*, Rich Jackson*, Ron McDole
DT: Tom Sestak*, Houston Antwine*, Buck Buchanan*, Tom Keating
LB: Nick Buoniconti*, Bobby Bell*, George Webster, Dan Conners, Larry Grantham*, Mike Stratton
CB: Willie Brown*, Dave Grayson*, Butch Byrd, Miller Farr
S: Johnny Robinson*, George Saimes, Goose Gonsoulin, Kenny Graham
K: George Blanda*, Jim Turner
P: Jerrel Wilson*, Bob Scarpitto
Coach: Weeb Ewbank, Sid Gillman*
This is an interesting part of the series I've been doing, because I don't know enough about the AFL to be able to make any definitive prescriptions for changes that should be made to the team. The players whose names have asterisks by them are those who I am either absolutely certain or pretty sure are deserving of their spots. Those without asterisks I am simply not sure about. I was really hoping to hear from the rest of you on this one, and maybe learn a thing or two about who really was the best of the best during the AFL's decade of existence.
Fire away.

Glaring absence: Jan Stenerud

Those kinds of plays were expected."

I submit the name of Daryl Lamonica. How do you write the AFL story without him?
Easily, I guess, because many people have.

Eh, not really. Blanda and Turner probably have better cases. After 1970, it's a different story.oldecapecod 11 wrote:Glaring absence: Jan Stenerud

"Eh, not really. Blanda and Turner probably have better cases. After 1970, it's a different story."
If one chooses to think of him as not the best kicker to have played in the AFL, that is certainly anyone's option.
Are they the same voices that support the exclusion of A-AFC accomplishments from a player's career? Who knows?
Concession: "Discretionary Exclusion" instead of "glaring absence."
It really does not matter.

I would have had Earl Faison as one of the DEs,
Re: AFL All-Time Team
I realize that Ewbank won the Super Bowl, but I think Hank Stram HAS to be one of the coaches. After all, he won one too, and he coached for the whole run of the AFL. I think I'd go with GIllman as the other coach, because he's more the image of the league than Ewbank. If they picked three coaches, though, I'd take Ewbank for the third.

To see how difference sources picked 1960s All-Deace teams
You can see some seams are a bit better than others.

Joe Namath "made" the AFL but Len Dawson should be the league's all-time QB.
I agree that Hank Stram should be one of the coaches. In my mind he's clearly the No. 1 guy based on three titles and a SB win.
