1958 NFL Week 12

Post by LeonardRachiele »

Since the Steelers played on a Saturday afternoon, CBS televised the historic game between the New York Giants and the Cleveland Browns from Yankee Stadium to the Pittsburgh area. The Giants had won the previous meeting at Cleveland 21 to 17. In spite of this victory, New York was 8-3, one game behind the first place Browns who were 9-2.

I felt very fortunate being able to watch this game. In a dark blizzard, Pat Summerall kicked a 48 yard field goal to give New York a 13 to 10 victory. A quick summary of the other two games follows. These three games were pivotal in making Pro Football our number one spectator sport and all three were at Yankee Stadium.

Eastern Conference Playoff-New York gave what I feel was the best defensive performance in a post season game winning 10 to 0.
In those days CBS carried all the regular season and playoff games. In spite of this, the NFL treated the Championship as a stand alone package and awarded the game to NBC. This odd arrangement ended in 1964. All of us know the Baltimore Colts defeated the New York Giants 23 to 17.
