HOVG?? No, its the HOI!!!
HOVG?? No, its the HOI!!!
Tired of splitting hairs between George Andrie and Bill Stanfill? Bored with debating the statistical merits of Bill Groman? Recounting the career of Buddy Parker just not doing it for you anymore? Yes folks, the HOVG has become obsolete. It has gone the way of the dinosaur and the flying wedge. Tony Latone has been enshrined (I think), so, like Alexander the Great, there are no nations left to conquer.
So I am proposing a new PFRA Hall of Fame. Its mission is to recognize individuals who were unique...innovators, oddities, trail blazers. The only criteria is that the person cannot already be in the PFHOF. Please vote for up to seven (7) people to comprise the inaugural class of the......

Roger Craig ... if Hester is greatest punt returner is Craig greatest pass catching back ?

Bobby Garrett ... Ist round bust
Frank Tripuka ... 1st round bust who had his jersey retired
Warren Wells & Darryl Turner ... deep threats that flamed out
Earl Morrall ... best backup QB or starter-b
Ken Kavanaugh ... TDs to catches ratio
Paul Warfield ... member of last Browns and Dolphins champion
OJ Anderson ... first running back to cross 10,000 yards without making HOF
Carroll Rosenbloom ... degenerate gambler
Bobby Layne ... invented two-minute drill, last to go without a facemask
Abe Woodson ... first bump and run coverage ?

Re: HOVG?? No, its the HOI!!!
Interesting idea. I'll add some guys too, apologies for being QB heavy.
Spec Sanders - obviously, everything about his career was interesting
Tex Hamer - likely first ever 1000 yard rusher
Charlie Mathys - 1st "wide receiver"?
Charley Rogers - only player to lead NFL in rushing and receiving in a season (1927)
Billy Hillenbrand - had an amazing rushing/receiving season, then just disappeared?
Benny Boynton - I could name a bunch of early years guys like this who had all the talent, but the game was just too small for them.
Walter "Sneeze" Achiu - first Asian NFL player
Davey O'Brien - NFL Draft's first megabust? Infamous backwards runner. You said they had to be interesting, but you never specified good...
Andy Farkas - if you're looking for a Baugh weapon, he's better than Wayne Millner
Harry Newman - played at MVP caliber as a rookie, then imploded spectacularly and found himself unemployed. Doubt we ever see this career arc again.
Whizzer White - equally interesting for becoming a SCOTUS justice, and for continuing to be allowed to throw the ball
Johnny Lujack - very good at many different skills and positions, but seemed to manifest those skills all at different times
Ben Agajanian - first specialist kicker, managed to stick around 20 years despite being the only one for most of that time
Tom Dempsey - longest kick record despite disability
Homer Jones - I am speed
Jimmy Hines - I am speed, paperhands version
Morris Stroud - giant TE, got goaltending FGs banned
Bobby Douglass - pretty much a 1930s tailback
Doug Williams - overcame biases of the era to win a SB... on the Redskins of all teams
Lester Hayes - got stickum banned by putting it all over his jersey
Bo Jackson - I don't need to explain this one
Dieter Brock - starring in "The 40-Year-Old Rookie"
Steve DeBerg - mainly for somehow getting signed at 44
Broderick Thomas - bust from a historic draft, but did have one insane season
Doug Flutie - unanimous 1st ballot interesting fellow
Vinny Testaverde - 1st overall bust with a legendary cannon became the next Morrall
Darren Sproles - jitterbug go brrrrrrrrrr
Tim Tebow - duh
Ryan Fitzpatrick - The Last Gunslinger, gets mysteriously better with age, and obviously the Fitztragic Cycle

And for a few coaches/GMs...
John McKay - inner-circle fascinating character, Casey Stengel of the NFL. Three or four plane crashes and we might be in the playoffs.
Jerry Glanville - another all-around character, gets extra for the high strangeness that was the rise and fall of Grits Blitz. Also drove race cars! And is currently coaching in the Spring League!
Dennis Green - He is... who we thought he was.
Matt Millen - recently proven to be unable to draft better than a randomizer with no set parameters whatsoever
Jerry Jones - do you really need to ask?

Re: HOVG?? No, its the HOI!!!
Sproles was so good, he made two HOF type backs expendable, Tomlinson from the Chargers and Bush from the Saints, though Bush never developed into a HOF back. Bush had the talent but didnt like to run inside and never seemed to get his career going after leaving the Saints.
With his overall, all purpose ability, I hope Sproles makes the HOF but once Hester gets voted in, that might be the end of any other great returners getting in, though we will see.
Will look up Charlie Mathys ... always thought Don Hutson was the first end to utilize pass patterns, or wide field targeting.
Johnny Lujack had great talent but couldnt sustain it. Kept Luckman on the bench and allowed Layne to get traded, a decision that would haunt George Halas ...

One would almost have to bring Hacksaw Reynolds into this type of conversation.

Re: HOVG?? No, its the HOI!!!
DeSean Jackson, Leon Lett, Dave Smith ... horseshoes and hand grenades club (almost TDs)
Ahmad Rashad ... 98 yrd play without scoring
Warrick Dunn ... smallest ever back with over 15,000 yards from scrimmage
Bill Walsh ... screwed Craig out of the HOF by making him a receiving back and screwed Paul Hofer out of playing in the Super Bowl by leaving his gimpy knee on a slick wet field in San Francisco
Reggie Smith, Trindon Holliday, Gerald McNeil, Noland Smith, ... mighty mites
Sonny Gibbs ... first tree disguised as a QB
Dan McGuire ... first tall tree disguised as a QB drafted in first round
Sherman Plunkett ... actually moved okay for a 335 pound lineman, which is the norm for tackles today, not 1967. Some Jets were upset he missed out on the SB run.
Pete Johnson, John Riggins ... TD battering rams
Al Charmichael, Buddy Young ... first great special teams returners ?
Mack Lee Hill, Stone Johnson, Derrick Thomas ... tragic deaths for the Chiefs
Ernie Davis, Joe Delaney, David Overstreet ... imagine their career totals had they not passed suddenly ?
