79 Season Opener/Bucs vs Lions

Post by JohnBowen »

Was looking at an old NFL Schedule from this season and it had this week 1 matchup as a Saturday game. This strikes me as odd. Was it actually on a Saturday, and if so, why?

All I can think of is that since it was a Florida game, it may have been moved a day in advance of a hurricane. Did the preseason schedule list it as Saturday or were you looking at the season results?

It was scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 1, all along. This account doesn't mention anything about a hurricane: http://archives.chicagotribune.com/1979 ... ing-record

Two years later they would open again at home on a Saturday night vs Vikes.

I had asked that question and received an answer back when this site was on the old server. Can't remember why they had those Saturday night games.

To beat the heat, I assume.

I was going to send the editor of this site (a great site I may add) to see if he had any info.

The 1978 Buc opener against the Giants was also on a Sat. night. This page offers an explanation:

As an 8 year old, those games flew by me unnoticed. I need to try and find a CBS NFL Today from 79 Week 1 and see what mention of it is made. Interesting.......
