Most Exciting Player in the NFL

Post by John Grasso »

In another post Randall Cunningham is referred to as the "Most Exciting Player in the NFL".
Who's your choice for that accolade? Mine is Fran Tarkenton.

Probably Walter Payton or Barry Sanders ...

I loved watching Payton hit defenders when finishing a run. If he played today, he would get 2300 yards in a season.

Bo Jackson though, with his speed was the only runner I ever saw who made me hold my breath ...

Gale Sayers...even to this day, I'll find some old GOTW highlight and Sayers will have a brilliant run that I had never seen before. It's incredible the amount of highlight reel plays he produced in such a short period of time.

I would concur with those listed (errr, with the exception of a certain food-based nicknamed individual) and would add:

Jerry Rice... every time he touched the ball...

Lynn Swan... the catches were incredible.

And a Personal favorite from my youth: Leroy Kelly... I think of him as a "poor man's" Gale Sayers. Maybe not quite as good (who ever was?) but he lasted a lot longer.

I never saw any of these guys "live" but highlights show they were pretty amazing: Hugh McElhenny, Ollie Matson and Lenny Moore were definitely "exciting."

About time someone gives 'Chop his respect. Legend!

Deion Sanders was the most exciting player, to me. The anticipation of him being back to return a punt. Immediate excitement the moment he got an interception -- or even when a teammate got an interception and would wait to see if they would pitch it back to him.

Hugh McElhenny for me. I still keep an eye out for footage I haven't seen yet.

I can name several on offense so I will pick a defensive player. Reggie White. Sacks never excited me until Reggie.

I was thinking of Lawrence Taylor, along the same lines.
I guess we're probably a generation apart... and someone a generation older than I might say Deacon Jones or Gino Marchetti.
