It's interesting to note that in 1953, the Colts' Bert Rechichar booted a 53-yard FG to establish a new record. 68 seasons later, the record has extended just 13 yards. The 53-yard kick was the record for, I believe, 17 years. It is true that 50-plus yarders are now commonplace but with all the advantages modern kickers enjoy (stadiums with more predictable surfaces, many of which are indoor, a different ball, kicking specialists, better shoes and the natural evolution of the human body) you'd think the record would have extended further.

If nothing else, once I realized all of the above, I had an increased appreciation for Rechichar's kick.
