Biggest almost-comeback

Post by Crazy Packers Fan »

Yesterday's huge comeback by the Cowboys got me thinking about the biggest in NFL history. 20 points down doesn't even make it on this list:

But what is the biggest "almost" comeback in NFL history? A comeback that came close to happening but came up just short. The 1992 Giants came back from down 34-0 against Dallas to make it 34-28, but the Cowboys ran out the clock. Are there any other examples of a team coming close to making a 4- or 5-touchdown comeback but falling just short?

The first one that came to my mind was this one. Washington had the ball at the end but was intercepted.

Week 3, 1989: Packers were down 38-7 to the Rams at halftime before coming back and falling short, 41-38:

Of course there was the 2015 playoff game in which Carolina b lew out to a 31-0 on Seattle and then barely held on to win 31-24.

Wow, all very good ones! Just imagine the memes that would have come out in 1951 if the Packers had not come back to win.

Another good one I just remembered is the 1981 Wild Card game where the Bills went up on the Jets 31-13 with about ten minutes to play. New York drove for two quick touchdowns, and in the final minutes were moving in for the go-ahead score when they were intercepted in the end zone.

On the subject of the 89 Packers, they had two comeback wins that sandwich that near miss against the Rams:

Week 2: https://www.pro-football-reference.com/ ... 170gnb.htm

Week 4: https://www.pro-football-reference.com/ ... 010gnb.htm

In Week 2, the Packers were down 24-7 to NO at the half, and they trailed 31-21 in the fourth quarter before pulling out a 35-34 win. In Week 4, they trailed the lowly Falcons 21-6 going into the fourth quarter before coming back and winning 23-21.

The game that everyone will remember is the 1981 season playoff classic between San Diego and Miami. The Chargers raced out to a 24-0 lead in the 1st qtr and won 41-38 in OT. Probably the greatest game in history for pure drama and excitement.
