Re: Horsecollars

I don’t like when the horse collar penalty is called on a play where the ball carrier was in no danger of being injured by the tackle. I think there should be some judgment on the official’s part involved with making the call but I feel that way about a lot of ticky tacky safety rules. I feel this ...

Re: 49ers were Innovators at Least for a While

I recall reading about the Bears running out of the "short punt" formation in the '50s vs the Lions. George Blanda, of all people. Yes - I've seen that too. There was lots of innovation in the 50's which made the game so fun to watch in that era. Many of the 60's and 70's innovations were...

Re: 49ers were Innovators at Least for a While

The San Francisco 49s,  along with the Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Colts,  came into the National Football League from the All America Conference after it folded in 1950.  In many ways,  this team had  innovators in pro football. New Flashes from the 49ers --The first left handed quarterback, Fr...

Horsecollars

We're all familiar with the Horsecollar rule, I'm wondering if it was an overreaction. Obviously, everything is now in the name of player safety, but in watching films from the 50s and 60s I see at least one horse collar per game and have yet to see an injury. If next year Patrick Mahomes and Josh A...

Re: Bill Bergy Blocks Three Kicks

I've always been somewhat fascinated with blocked kicks, and have always thought there should be an official stat for it. There were some guys, like Ted Hendricks and Doug Atkins, who specialized in it. Any others come to mind? I wonder if Bergey's 3 blocks is some kind of record for a game? https:...

Re: The Legend of Brett Favre

The performance against the Raiders after his father died. Everything he threw was being caught by his receivers and even the Raiders crowd was in awe. The Packers probably could have won it all that season but then the defense collapsed on 4th and 27 against the Eagles, allowing a comeback. After ...

Re: Patrick Mahomes vs John Elway

These are two players that you very easily can make a comparison to. Both are/were about the same size. Both can do incredible things with their arms and both are/were relatively mobile. Infact on top of that I think the current Chiefs teams also compare very well to those '80's Broncos teams. The ...

Most stints with the same team

I was surprised to see Bruce Irvin back with the Seahawks this season, that makes it his third stint with the same team interrupted by playing elsewhere. I can think of tons of two-stint players are there other threes, or fours, or more?

Re: Why isn't Mark Gastineau in the HOF?

He's certainly HOVG and in my mind should at least be discussed as HOF - though he never really is. There are lots of strikes against him. - Loses a lot of sacks to the pre'82 era - His teammates hated him, publically so - Opponents hated him, publically so, the dancing was offputting - I think even...
