Re: Your favorite episode of "A Football Life"

Great feedback everyone, really cool stuff. Jeff, it's remarkable you mentioned Tom Dempsey, as I just recently came across an anecdote from a news brief that on Nov. 9, 1975, Dempsey hit San Francisco's Ralph McGill in the head with his foot on a field goal attempt. McGill was taken, unconscious, ...

trivia

In doing some research for the upcoming 1951 L.A. Rams book I came upon the following piece of trivia that I found interesting. One of the Rams on that team was Tom Keane (whose bio I'm working on) who later played for the 1953 Baltimore Colts. The Colts rejoined the NFL that year and in their first...

I do like how the AAF will have no kickoffs (and onside kicks) and no extra point kicks. This league will be good for some experiments.
Why not eliminate punts also and make teams go for it on fourth down. They could also rename the game
Footless Ball.

Re: Definition of "semiprofessional" for football

Although the A.A.U. didn't like the idea very much, it decided that clubs could indeed offer employment without losing their amateur status or compromising the athlete. In other words, if you paid a fellow $20 a week to cut your grass and $20 a game to play football, he was a professional; if you p...

1940s abbreviations

I'm working on the next book in our series and came across these abbreviations
for starting lineups in a 1947 newspaper:
LER, LTR, LGR, C, RGl, RTL, REL, Q, LHR, RHL, F

It appears that the positions are left end, left tackle etc.
but why the extra letter? Is it left end right and right end left?

Oakland Senors

In doing some research for the upcoming book on the 1951 L.A. Rams
I came across the fact that the original name suggested for the Oakland Raiders new AFL team
in 1960 was the Oakland Señors.
The team's president-general manager, Chet Soda, would great people with "Hello Senor".

Re: "Who Am I?" trivia

I found him although I cheated. I used PFR to find a player with a 68 yard interception return for a touchdown.
I thought there would only be one or two but there have been 19 from 1938-2015.
But using the other hints it was easy to narrow the list down.

Re: Helms Athletic Foundation Hall of Fame

I was out there a few years ago (our Olympic organization was making a presentation to the LA84 curator). They have an excellent sport library which they were in the process of digitizing. One item in their collection is complete official Olympic reports which I found useful. I believe their memorab...
