Re: Ken Anderson: Hall of Fame?

It's unfair to compare QBs who played the bulk of their careers before the expanded playoffs with others who didn't, like Tittle and Jurgensen. Marino and Fouts were up and down in the postseason, but both were saddled with porous defenses, and the 1984 Niners were superior to the 1981 Niner team An...

Re: Ken Anderson: Hall of Fame?

The weakness of sabermetric thinking is valuing data above all else, and the results of the election Tuesday was another good example of the limitations of that approach. Stats are just another tool in the toolbox, because watching games must always be a part of the evaluation. The memory of Ken And...

Re: Senior 2017

2. Giving Stabler an implied nod for nearly winning the Immaculate Reception game while ignoring Anderson's play in his Super Bowl loss strikes me as unfair. Anderson lost the game to perhaps the best QB ever at the top of his game in a last minute drive for the ages, and one might perhaps argue th...

Re: Senior 2017

With Stabler getting in last year one might expect a push for Ken Anderson, who was in all likelyhood a stronger HOF candidate than Stabler. Don't know if Anderson will ever get in, Stabler's edge in the postseason makes him a better QB in my opinion. Anderson has good stats, but rarely led the Ben...

Re: Ken Anderson: Hall of Fame?

A close no for Anderson, and I think it's telling few people were talking about him for the HOF when Boomer Esiason beat him out for the starting job. Modern stats can sometimes elevate the perception of older players, especially if you didn't see them live. Virgil Carter actually used the West Coas...

Re: The drought list

I don't count relocated teams in this type of discussion, the Arizona(or Phoenix) Cardinals have actually only existed since they moved in the late 80s. The Arizona fans don't care about what happened with the Cardinals in St. Louis, that was a different entity. The Detroit Lions have the longest a...

Re: The drought list

I heard more than one media person say last week that the Cleveland Indians now have the longest championship drought among the four big American major leagues. Of course, they're actually tied for that dubious honor with the Arizona Cardinals, who will re-take the mantle if they don't win the Supe...

Re: Jay Cutler Historical Comparison Discussion

I've always felt statistics can help tell part of the story, but aren't the complete picture. Jeff George, Jay Cutler, etc., are among those QBs with some good career numbers, but they also failed to make key plays during games which cost their teams. Later in games, when their teams were trailing, ...

Re: Jay Cutler Historical Comparison Discussion

It probably makes no sense statistically, but I think he's a lot like Jeff George: Great arm, little brain, doesn't handle adversity well. George is decent too. He lead the NFL in passing yards one year and wasn't the turnover machine Cutler is. Relative to his peers George's peak was easily higher...
