Re: "Deacon" on back of Deacon Jones's jersey

During the Rams 1971 MNF game against Washington and George Allen, the ABC announcers called Jones David or Dave. I've watched a video of the game and it sounds silly. Jones was known as Deacon Jones. Offensive linemen had other names for him, but he was known as Deacon to the fans and it was silly...

Re: NFL Defenses of 1977

the Mel Blount rule Interesting note the phrase "Mel Blount rule" never showed up in print until 1990. he was part of it but Chuck Noll actually said the rule was going to help Blount and his fellow Steelers CBs because they couldn't be penalized for "riding" receivers within 5 ...

Re: Worst draft classes for a team

1980- Traded 1st round to Baltimore for John Dutton Turned out to work out wonders for Dallas Others have commented on this, but in fairness to Dallas, their backs against the wall. They felt they were still in Super Bowl window and saw Larry Bethea was not going to fill Too Tall's shoes. So, Dutto...

"Deacon" on back of Deacon Jones's jersey

Had a Twitter exchange was conace21 (Adam C) about that 1972 season and I'd forgotten some details and went down the wormhole of seeing when he switched from "Deacon" to "D.Jones". Turns out it was week 10, vs Chiefs at Arrowhead. He wore "D. Jones" the final four weeks...

Re: A ton of information in this article

Good point John I don't think there's really a right or wrong answer agree. We just don't know much about the thinking of the time ... Cliff gave us a lot of insight, but still ... a lot of questions. It's just interesting to me to wonder what happened. Now? I do think you're right, it's like --- h...

Re: A ton of information in this article

I'm thinking they cancel each other out Maybe now ... but I was thinking about then. I know it's hard to get into the heads of voters at the time -- it's possible they didn't think in terms of "too many Packers" or "too many Giants" that is more of a modern ethic, but that's a g...

Re: Pre-1966 NFL Championship Game MVPs

The way the Rams split snaps with QBs, hard for Van Brocklin to be 1951 MVP --
Fears caught GW pass---but just 4 catches on the day but would prob. have to go to him. Browns
held passing of Rams in check until that 73-yarder for the TD.

Re: A ton of information in this article

A ton of information in this article about the early voting process for the Hall of Fame. The unanimous thing always was curious --- Bob Oates told me that is how "they wanted it" early on ... but Don Smith once said it was engineered, that once the group was decided on those who objected...

Re: Pre-1966 NFL Championship Game MVPs

Sammy Baugh in 1937, for sure, and probably 1942 also. Sid Luckman is a good bet for 1943 and '46 -- maybe '41 too. Probably Bob Waterfield in 1945? Ken Strong in 1934, or maybe Ed Danowski. Otto Graham in 1950, and probably '54 or '55, if not both. agree with all those, except perhaps Waterfield. ...
