Re: Something dumb that you remember about watching the NFL

The Tuck Rule game ... damn the ruling and interpretation of the "incomplete pass" ... Brady clearly brought the ball down from a passing motion making him a RUNNER who fumbled the ball into the Raiders hands. No way that was an intended pass. It was a correct interpretation of a dumb rul...

Re: NFL "what-if" scenarios thread

What if Johnny Unitas had played until he was 75 without losing any of his skills?

Re: 2022/1989 Pittsburgh Steelers

I am a Steelers and Yankees fan. So was my mom. I heard a story about how she abused the TV after Maz's HR in 1960. She was a big Steeler fan when I was growing up, but she wasn't as much into baseball (although I remember watching some of the Pirates' and Pens early-90's playoffs with her). It see...

Re: Ranking all NFLCG winners, '33 thru '65

Neft-Cohen's Pro Football: The Early Years lists all NFL players and their years of military service (pp. 160-161). Here are the totals by year: 1941--44 (we tend to forget that the draft started in late 1940) 1942--202 1943--376 1944--418 1945--358 How many of those were stateside and still played...

Re: Goal Posts

Here's a 1946 postcard of City Stadium. If you look closely, you can see the offset.

Re: Goal Posts

The goalposts in Green Bay's old City Stadium were always offset like that. I saw my first game there in 1946 (I was 7 years old) and I was at every home game from 1947 through 1954.

Re: A question about NFL Recordkeeping

This is what Johnny Blood told me about Lewellen: "I still haven't seen anybody who could punt the ball like Lewellen. He kicked it deep and very high, so there was just never any chance for a return. They talk about the kicking game now, but it was even more important in some of those low scor...

Re: Pittsburgh Steelers in 1957

About two months before the subject season, Buddy Parker announced he was leaving the Detroit Lions and was headed to the Pittsburgh Steelers. That's not quite the way it happened. Parker stunned the crowd at a "Meet the Lions" banquet on August 10 by announcing that he was resigning beca...
