Re: Relocation
Cheyenne, Wyoming or Fargo, North Dakota would be better suited to support an NFL franchise than Vegas would. Fargo makes more sense than most people would think. If Green Bay can do it, why not Fargo? Great football town (ran into Phil Hansen at a convenience store one late Friday night in my coll...

Re: Relocation
Either San Antonio or Las Vegas come with some issues, not the least that it would require at a minimum a retractable dome or some interesting scheduling. A September 1PM start would be brutal. San Antonio has the advantage in gross population but it's not a particularly affluent one and Vegas is s...

Re: SB Betting Lines Early Years
Going into Super Bowl XIV, the smart money thought the Steelers would win by a blowout, maybe by four touchdowns. No team has been a four touchdown favorite in the Super Bowl. In 1995, the 49ers were as much as a 19-point favorite over San Diego (and they won by 23), and the remains the biggest spr...

Going into Super Bowl XIV, the smart money thought the Steelers would win by a blowout, maybe by four touchdowns. Many did think that. Martin's rationale for his (opening ) ten point line was as follows: "Malavasi's right that his team matches up pretty well with the Steelers. The offensive li...

Re: SB Betting Lines Early Years
I saw Larry King on an episode of Lost Treasures saying he asked Jimmy "The Greek" why the Redskins were favored over Miami and Jimmy said something to the effect of "they're still AFL". Flippant as the remark seems, The Greek had a point. I have an uncle who to this day hates o...

Re: SB Betting Lines Early Years
Public perception usually, not always, plays a big part in NFL betting lines. The Dolphins had a a weak schedule and didn't really blow teams off the field. The Redskins looked more impressive in the playoffs than the Dolphins did - on the scoreboard. Whether they were or weren't more impressive doe...

Re: SB Betting Lines Early Years
Closing lines were less official back then but most outlets had the Redskins favored by two points. I misread Halas Hall's post as asking why the Redskins were favored over a team that went into the game undefeated.

Re: SB Betting Lines Early Years
Since we're on topic, interesting anecdote about Super Bowl XIV: Bob Martin, the legendary Las Vegas linemaker who was also primarily responsible for setting the 17 point line in SB III, made the Steelers a ten-point favorite over the Rams in Super Bowl XIV. Rams' coach Ray Malavasi was steamed abo...
