Re: Most place kickers By a single team in a season
You see a lot of players back "then" kicking off that one would have a hard time thinking as kickers, such as Gene Upshaw for the Raiders in 1967 and 1968. Agreed. I'm wondering if you're including them in your tally. Looking through my notes, I see that the 1951 Lions also used at least ...

Re: Most place kickers By a single team in a season
In the pre-specialist era four was the most number of kickers used by any team. If you count kickers who just kicked off, then the '52 Lions used at least 5 kickers: Harder, Walker, Layne, Hardy, and Summerall. Summerall, drafted as a "kickoff specialist" who could consistently knock the ...

Re: Most place kickers By a single team in a season
The 1952 Lions used 4 kickers en route to winning the NFL title. Pat Harder took over kicking duties when Doak Walker was injured, and Bobby Layne filled in when Harder's watery knee acted up. Jim Hardy, Layne's back-up at QB, was the 4th kicker that season, and thereby hangs a tale. When Green Bay ...

Re: Opinions(?) about Pigskin: The Early Years of Pro Footba
I can't find my copy of Pigskin ---it's packed away in a box somewhere---but I know I referred to it several times over the years in my own writings. I recall that he interviewed several old-timers, guys like Vince Banonis. I also remember being disappointed by the handful of small, grainy photos us...

Re: Titans vs Steelers game postponed over Covid
Channel 5 here in Nashville is reporting that this game will be rescheduled for later in the season due to another player and another person in the Titans organization testing positive. The new game date will be announced "shortly". They can do that because at this early stage there's sti...

Re: Titans vs Steelers game postponed over Covid
Could we perhaps be facing the possibility that for the first time since 1935, not all the league's teams will play a uniform number of regular season games? I think the season will be played to completion and a SB winner will be crowned, but yeah, I can definitely see teams playing an uneven numbe...

Re: Titans vs Steelers game postponed over Covid
I'm actually kind of surprised it took this long. I imagine there will be more incidents like this---seems unavoidable, no matter how hard teams try---but I think the entire season and playoffs will be played. But what a nightmare it we get down to the division title games or the Super Bowl and a te...

Re: Canadian Football Books
Over the years I've had a lot of luck getting old books, newspapers, and magazines on AbeBooks.

Larry Wilson and that busted looking beak. Loved the guy. He was one of the guys who personified football in the 1960s.
