Re: Early NFL "MVPs"

To add to the discussion, here are some revelations I've gleaned since receiving my 1994 Neft encyclopedia: All Packer games for the entire decade from 1923-32 are completely recorded except for one 1930 game. This means that the stats for the likes of Dunn, Lewellen, Blood and so on can be consider...

Re: Pats Lost the Game But Gained a Quarterback

That Canton-Buffalo game last night sure was something; really thought the All-Americans would pull that one out, but they just couldn't stop Jim Thorpe and Oliphant has been brilliant at times but too inconsistent. The Bulldogs are in control of the title race, but let's see if they can keep it rol...

Re: Benny Friedman NPR, and a word on statistical completene

I've run into a couple unexpected developments that I'd like some input on: Herber's career NPR is 87.8, which puts him between Dawson and Staubach on the board. But I have to give special mention to the granddaddy of all Luckman Effects: the 9th-highest rated season with a minimum of 100 attempts, ...

Re: Micah Parsons, a legend in the making?

Ronnie Lott to me, had the best rookie season on defense in NFL history. Hmmm...I don't think he beats Night Train Lane, who set a record for interceptions that still stands, 59 years later, even though he played in a 12-game season. This is actually less impressive than it sounds. Double-digit int...

Re: Micah Parsons, a legend in the making?

How is his rookie season comparing to how Lawrence Taylor looked when he first came into the league. Probably unfair to compare him to Taylor during his prime years right now but how does he compare to LT during the '81 and '82 seasons? This is exactly what I want to know. Parsons seems on par stat...

Re: Benny Friedman NPR, and a word on statistical completene

Just acquired my Neft encyclopedia; currently working on NPR calculations for Herber and interpolating incomplete games for Friedman. Regarding the former, I guess I'll save the lengthy discussions for the published article unless I see signs of activity picking back up in this thread, but I'll say ...

Micah Parsons, a legend in the making?

Parsons hit 10 sacks for his rookie season tonight, and seems likely to reach 100 tackles by the end of it as well. Every time I watch the Cowboys, which is surely no shortage of sample size thanks to the NFL's disproportionate favoring of them for national coverage, Parsons jumps out at me as an im...

Re: Kirk Cousins at least second-best Vikings QB all-time?

Cousins has pretty stats but he isn't a tenth of the quarterback Tarkenton is. I have to admit this may well be his very best season though, he has become something more than a boring game manager and solidified a place in the top half of current starting QBs. Would still put him in the third tier, ...

Re: An alternate All-30s Team

There's a problem with T&S's team that I somehow didn't notice on my first pass through this thread. Hutson is wasted if he doesn't have someone to get him the ball, and I don't trust Dutch Clark to do that on a regular basis. So Herber will need to be on the first team, which means someone will...

Re: Early NFL "MVPs"

For 1920, I agree that the selection should be someone from Akron. It's really hard to tell who was the most important player on the team, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was Pollard. It was unquestionably Pollard in 1921, but for some reason they weren't quite as good. All-Pro teams and such are ...
