Re: Benny Friedman NPR, and a word on statistical completene

Another question I would need to know before I try turning this into a CC article: were there any changes to the ball, the rules, or any other aspect of how the game was played, that would have made passing more efficient between the late 20s when Friedman was in his prime, and the early 40s when Ba...

Re: Benny Friedman NPR, and a word on statistical completene

Good post! You should put this together into an article. Rupert's book is also on my list to pick up. Do you mean the Coffin Corner? I did happen to wonder if this kind of research would be worthy of publication. What is the process for submitting work to be considered? I knew about the typos, like...

Benny Friedman NPR, and a word on statistical completeness

I recently picked up my copy of Rupert Patrick's excellent A Statistical History of Pro Football . Being quite a fan of his Normalized Passer Rating system, and since his work begins with the 1932 NFL season, I decided to calculate it for pro football's first undisputed GOAT, Benny Friedman, for eac...

I also find it hard to see a case for Gilchrist. In order to get in with that short a career, he'd need to be Hennigan or Terrell Davis good. He wasn't.

Re: What is your personal "GOAT progression"?

Was that the stupidest trade in NFL history? Jim Ninowski had one of the worst starting tenures in history with the Lions. Meanwhile, Milt Plum was pretty fresh off a season with a PR of like 110. Milt Plum criticized Paul Brown for not letting him call the plays. Brown traded Plum as fast as he co...

Re: Make a HOVG Case for any of these Players

Marshall is a weird player. He was a quality player for a very long time, but "quality player" is about as far as one could describe him at any moment. Basically the opposite of someone like Hennigan. So the counting numbers look like a HOFer, but it's tough to say he ever played like one....

Re: Todd Gurley and Le'veon Bell

Now Bell has been released by the Ravens, an opportunity that could have resurrected his career. Can he ever get untracked again ? Or his desire completely gone ? I've never seen a RB come back from as low a point. Would love to hear an example of a formerly elite back bouncing around multiple team...

Re: What is your personal "GOAT progression"?

I personally dont believe Brady would have stayed healthy against the pass rushers of the eighties or early nineties Yeah, I'm sure he'd be long retired by age 44 if he was playing in a less friendly era to QB longevity. But there's still no telling he wouldn't have held up better than, say, Marino...

Re: What is your personal "GOAT progression"?

This thread is at risk of getting derailed by "I'm one of 3 people on earth with this opinion" opinions, so let's reorient. I openly invited debate with the OP, but there seems to be too much feeling and not enough reason going on at the moment, never a good recipe. New question: we have G...
