The Football Encyclopedia

Just a question for anyone who owns The Football Encyclopedia: The Complete History of Professional Football From 1892 to the Present (Neft & Cohen, 1994). Does it include statistics from the pre-stats era of the NFL in the 1920’s? With men such as Verne Lewellen and Lavvie Dilweg being up for p...

Re: NFL 100 All Time Team QB's

Many of you might not be old enough to remember it, but there was another crucial season for rule changes back in 1978. I forget just what rules were changed that year, but I believe that was when they made it legal for blockers to extend their arms, along with another reduction in how much contact...

Re: NFL 100 All Time Team QB's

The stats today can no longer be compared to any other era. It was fine until about 2011, seemed like natural inflation, but then it went into overdrive and stopped being fun anymore. I really equate the change of eras to the 2009 season and the Tom Brady Rule. That’s when the “Madden Era” began fo...

I was referencing your first post about Starr in my reply as well.

Re: NFL 100 All Time Team QB's

On Starr - He is renowned for his efficiency, high completion percentage and low turnovers, particularly the 3 INT season. But it was too erratic for my taste. There were plenty of years where his efficiency was below league average... like the year after the 3 INT season! And for as little as he t...

The Packers' team historian Cliff Christl made a strong case for Lewellen here:

Pretty convincing as far as I'm concerned.

90's Oilers Run and Shoot Offense

I have another question similar to my HB/FB question that you guys helped answer for me. In 1990 and 1991 the Houston Oilers started four wide receivers (Hill, Jeffires, Givins, Duncan) in all 16 of their regular season games. Does anyone know in their offense what those receivers were technically c...

Re: Fullbacks, Halfbacks, Running Backs?

Interesting! So the three-back backfield was most common, with a LHB, FB, and RHB. Then the RHB morphed into the flanker position, with the remaining HB and FB commonly split in a Pro Set formation. Then the fullback, typically the larger of the two backs, transitioned to mostly blocking assignments...

Fullbacks, Halfbacks, Running Backs?

This may be a dumb question, but I've been trying to get this straight for some time and cannot find the answer I'm looking for online. In the 60's and 70's it seemed that the primary ball-carrier in an offense was the "fullback" (Jim Brown, Jim Taylor, John Brockington...) and his backfie...
