Re: How was home field determined for pre-1966 div. playoffs

Thanks, Ryan and Richard. I went searching old newspapers for it and had not found it yet, but I figured eventually someone would have had to have written about it. The coin flip scenario made the most sense. Once they went to four divisions, establishing tiebreaking criteria made more sense than pl...

Re: Overtime rule proposal

I never liked that attitude. It always seemed like the attitude of a bully, to me. How, exactly? All I ever hear from "football guys" is that it's about "who wants it more" and "we weren't respected, well who's laughing now?" and all that macho swagger b.s. How, exactl...

Re: How was home field determined for pre-1966 div. playoffs

Yeaaaaaah, but ( a ) I didn't say "make the playoffs," and ( b ) the games to determine who "won their division (/conference)" were referred to as "playoffs," so that's the correct nomenclature. I asked how they determined who hosted those playoffs , which were one game...

Re: Game books update

Just an update on the gamebooks search: I have received from the Packers every gamebook they have from the 1960's. They were only missing 5 gamebooks from 1960 and 1 gamebook from 1966, so overall not bad, as those are now the only gamebooks we're missing from 1960 to present. Very cool, I need GB'...

Re: Overtime rule proposal

That is interesting. I never liked the switch to "both teams get possession (except for a touchdown)." I remember hearing that nonsense when the Chargers ended the Dolphins' run at a perfect season in 1984. You have a defense. You want the ball? Get the ball back by stopping the other team.

How was home field determined for pre-1966 div. playoffs?

The search function tells me the terms are too common, so I'll ask the group: prior to the split into Capitol/Coastal/Century/Central divisions in 1966, how was home field for a conference playoff (like Browns-Giants in 1958) determined? Coin flip?

Re: NFL Attendance Discrepancies, 1946-49

Annual yearly attendance doesn't make an appearance in the NFL Record Manuals until 1963. (It's listed in the table of contents for the 1962 edition, but page 77 - at least in my copy - is blank.) The totals printed then were no doubt carried through with each reprinting as they probably saw no need...

Re: Thoughts on these 70s-80s backup QBs

Feels like Kruczek and Fuller were in the optimal situations. Kruczek was pressed into service in '76, and with that defense, he didn't have to do much of anything. (And he didn't - at least he didn't screw up. He only had to throw 72 times in his six starts!) Ditto for Fuller (who I always liked) -...

Re: 'bombshell' news soon to be released

It was the typical, "I know something, and I want you to know I know something, but you're going to have to let your imagination run wild based on this cryptic tweet, and no matter what it turns out to be, I will say I knew it all along, though I was completely vague about it, so you will think...

Re: USFL gamebooks

I'm sure they exist somewhere. Why are you sure they exist somewhere? I know film of the 1919 World Series was unearthed in the last few years, but I don't know that any USFL game books are buried in the Alaskan tundra. It may very well be that they don't exist. Someone likely would have produced t...
