Re: 2023 Hall of Very Good Finalists
Its the Steelers though guys, the last team to leave the single-wing, which had to have helped Nickels' blocking ability. As soon as the Steelers went to the T, his numbers jumped. Had Nickel played longer into the Bobby Layne years, might have made the Hall but we dont know because he was hurt in ...

Re: 2023 Hall of Very Good Finalists
I still want to know what about him or any other 1950s end is more or less "tight" than the rest. Nothing. I think this is an incorrect argument. Maybe blame the Steelers. I think they put him in their ring of honor as a tight end. The author of the "The Golden Age of Pro Football&qu...

Re: 2023 Hall of Very Good Finalists
I don't think Elbie Nickel's case depends on being the first tight end. If you take Hirsch, Billy Wilson, Nickel, Billy Howton, Fears, Harlon Hill, etc. (off the top of my head), they are all in one hall or the other except Nickel - I think it’s an omission. I’ve nominated him multiple times since I...

Re: Gus Sonnenberg
Was reading Pudge Heffelfinger's book last night and came across this: Dartmouth's strongest lineman? Gus Sonnenberg of the 1919 edition. He later became professional wrestling champion. Gus cost the Dartmouth Athletic Association plenty of money by ripping out hotel room radiators from the floor - ...

Re: NFL Controversial Plays Prior to 1960
I have read that the game-winning FG by Lou Groza in the 1950 championship was hotly disputed by the Rams as not going through the uprights, but I have not been able to find any footage of the kick. There's a recording available online called "1950 NFL Championship The Way it Was" where a...

Re: Should Ricky Watters be the next RB in Canton?
I don't think my post directly addressed it but my vote would be for Alexander. A bit perplexed he's been nowhere to be found thus far in the HOF process but I have faith he will be found. Too bad the OP didn't come back, but my thought was if they looked at the voting how I suggested, Alexander mi...

Herman Kerkhoff was a good one too. Had the size and speed. Prior to his Ohio League days was used quite a bit as a ball carrier in guards back type formations especially in short yardage.

At least the '25 Cardinals are still 9-2-1.

Re: David Woodley
That was a great article. Thanks for posting it @7DnBrnc53. I remember when we first talked about it, but I would have never found it. There is a good chapter about Woodley in PFRA member Tom Danyluk's Majesty and Mayhem: Pro Football of the 1980s too. In my opinion, you don't start Strock, but you ...

Re: Brandon Jacobs on RBs
In the Dolphins existence, only Csonka and Ricky Williams have had multiple 1,000 yard seasons (3 each). 7 other backs did it once. I remember a lot of talk of getting a running back to compliment Marino, but it never really happened. I haven't paid much attention in recent years, so when I saw Ryan...
