Eagles 1982 to 1987

Post by LeonardRachiele »

In the subject time period, the Philadelphia Eagles had one bright streak which, I thought, would guarantee a playoff spot. Unfortunately,  the team went downhill after that losing four straight and finishing 7-9;  it was 1985 and it was nice while it lasted.  During this time Reggie White  first made fans aware of what was to come.

Week 6 St. Louis at Veterans Stadium
The Cardinals came in at 3-2 and the Eagles 1-4.   Ron Jaworski was 18 for 28 for 243 yards and three touchdowns.   Running Back Ernest Jackson gained 123 yards.  The Eagles got four sacks and two turnovers.  Eagles 30 Cardinals 7

Week 7 Dallas at Veterans Stadium
The Cowboys were 5-1 and the Eagles 2-4 .  Paul McFadden kept the Eagles close with three field goals.  Then Jaworski  threw a long pass to Kenny Jackson for a touchdown.  Wes Hopkins made two interceptions deep in Eagles territory to frustrate Cowboys drives.  Reggie White got a sack.  Eagles 16 Cowboys 14

Week 8 Buffalo at Veterans Stadium
The Bills were 1-6 and the Eagles 3-4.  The Eagles did nothing on offense for three quarters.  In the fourth quarter, Ron Jaworski bootlegged in for a touchdown.  Wes Hopkins return an interception 24 yards for another.   Finally Jaworski fired a 28 yard touchdown pass to Mike Quick to for the  win. Eagles 21 Bills 17.  Reggie White recorded another sack.

In week 9, the Eagles lost to the San Francisco 49ers 24 to 13.

Week 10  Atlanta at Veterans  Stadium
The Falcons were  1-8 and the Eagles were 4-5

Despite some flaws, our team was leading 17 to 0 with eight minutes left.  While I was thinking about a  shutout,  the Atlanta Falcons came to life with no one play igniting them:

the first three capped short drives:

--Joe Washington ran 18 yards for a touchdown;
--Gerald Riggs ran two yards for another;
--the Eagles held on third and two and Mick Luckhurst kicked an 18 yard field goal;
--on the next series after the kickoff,  Jaws threw an interception but;
--the Eagles again held and Luckhurst barely missed a 43 yards field goal-overtime.

Overtime began under a real cloud.  The Eagles held and Atlanta for three and out at Falcons 30.   Any satisfaction dissipated as Atlanta punter Rick Donnelly put the kick out at the Philadelphia one.  Jaws tried a long pass to Kenny Jackson that the defender broke up at the 40.  A punt from deep in the End Zone or a turnover seemed a certainty .  Jaworksi then threw a flair pass to Mick Quick just designed for a short gain.  Quick simply eluded Falcons defenders and cruised 99 yards for the touchdown.  From the time he hit the 20  the crowd knew this one was in the win column.  Fans voted this 99 yard play  one of the 75 best in Philadelphia history.   Lest I forget, Reggie White kept the Falcons honest with two sacks and constant  pressure.  Eagles 23 Falcons 17.

Week 11 at St Louis
Mick Quick caught two touchdown passes in the first quarter but the Cardinals answered with two in the  second.  With the third quarter scoreless, the game was tied at 14 after three quarters.  The Philadelphia Eagles dominated the fourth quarter with a 51 yard touchdown ran from Ernest Jackson and a field goal from Paul McFadden.  For the day, Jackson ran for 162 yards. Reggie White had three of the Eagles' seven sacks.  Eagles 24 Cardinals 14.

The records now was 6-5 but the Eagles then lost four in a row.
