A. Woodson, D. Grayson, B. Boyd, C. Green, B. Byrd for HOVG

Post by bachslunch »

Five CBs (some also played safety) not in, with honors:

Abe Woodson (5/5/none)
Dave Grayson (6/6/allAFL)
Bobby Boyd (4/2/60s)
Cornell Green (4/5/none)
Butch Byrd (5/5/allAFL)

Woodson, Grayson, and Byrd also returned kicks, with Woodson being world-class at it.

Should mention that while many likely consider Woodson's strong suit to be kick returning, he also apparently was an excellent cover cornerback. Or at least so says Ray Berry, where he lists Woodson, Irv Cross, Dick LeBeau, Dick Lynch, and Jesse Whittenton among the opposing players he respected the most, calling them formidable man-to-man corners.

What we are seeing from these multiple posts is that there are many "Very Good" players out there who deserve recognition.
It is hard to find fault with most of the suggestions.

I guess my personal preference for this one is:
1. Woodson
2. Green
3. Boyd
4. Grayson
5. Byrd

Butch Byrd played eight seasons in the NFL, nine years as a full-time starter with the Buffalo Bills (1964-1970) and his last year as a substitute with the Denver Broncos (1971). During Byrd's eight seasons, only hall-of-famer Dick LeBeau had more interceptions. LeBeau had 41 interceptions and Byrd had 40. Byrd returned his interceptions during that span for 666 yards and 5 touchdowns while LeBeau returned his interceptions for 389 yards and 1 touchdown. During these same seasons, hall-of-famer Herb Adderley caught 35 interceptions. LeBeau played six more seasons than Byrd and caught a total of 62 interceptions. Adderley played 4 more years than Byrd and tallied a total of 48 interceptions.
