1987 Week 2: The Cardinals had the ball on the five yard line and fourth down, but Earl Ferrell wasn't able to hold on to a Neil Lomax pass, and their comeback against the Chargers falls short:

Week 9, 1977: Steelers lead 35-10 over Browns in the fourth quarter, then hold on for a 35-31 win.

Week 1, 2014: Steelers lead 27-3 at the half against the Browns, who end up tying it at 27 late in the game. Steelers kick FG at the gun to win it.

That's okay...after the strike the Cardinals scored 28 fourth quarter points to erase a 28-3 deficit to defeat the Buccaneers 31-28.

My introduction to this topic came in 1988.

The Buccaneers trailed the Colts 35-10 entering the fourth quarter. Vinny Testaverde caught fire in the final stanza: nine of fifteen passing, 226 yards, and three touchdowns. The Bucs got the ball back with just under 2:00 to play and got to the Colts 43 with under a minute to play but Testaverde's pass to Bruce Hill on fourth and two fell incomplete.

This game hurt for awhile. The Colts were a playoff team at home in a loud dome and the Bucs and Vinny looked like they turned a corner. That turned out to be far from the truth. It would be yet another decade before Tampa Bay had a winning season.

Today! Bills take a 28-3 lead over the Rams. Rams score 29 unanswered to lead 32-28. Josh Allen leads a final drive to win it for Buffalo 35-32.

Crazy Packers Fan wrote:Yesterday's huge comeback by the Cowboys got me thinking about the biggest in NFL history. 20 points down doesn't even make it on this list:

But what is the biggest "almost" comeback in NFL history? A comeback that came close to happening but came up just short. The 1992 Giants came back from down 34-0 against Dallas to make it 34-28, but the Cowboys ran out the clock. Are there any other examples of a team coming close to making a 4- or 5-touchdown comeback but falling just short?
You might have seen another game yesterday that featured a 25 point comeback

I ran across this while doing some fumble research and thought of this thread. The Chiefs nearly blew a 32-point lead against Denver on 11/1/1964. Headed for the go-ahead TD, the Broncos fumbled a few yards from the KC goal line. The Chiefs converted that turnover into the clinching TD. Too bad Hank Stram wasn't miked up for this game. Re Len Dawson, has a QB ever thrown 6 TD passes and lost? Couple of Google articles:

The Saints almost blew a 45-10 lead against the Lions on 10/15/2017. Detroit scored four straight touchdowns to make it a seven-point game, but Cam Jordan picked off Stafford in the end zone shortly after that to extend New Orleans' lead to 52-38.

Today: The Browns led 41-14, Dallas got it down to 41-38 with less than five minutes left, but the Browns quickly scored for a 49-38 win.

I remember both Marino and Brady leading comebacks overcoming 28-0 deficits before losing. Marino did it against the Warren Moon-led Vikings in the 1994 regular season and Brady did the same thing against the Kaepernick-led 49ers in the 2012 season. Incredible games ...
