HOVG QBs - 1940s thru 1960s

Post by sluggermatt15 »

I was going through the 1940s thru the 1960s looking at QBs who may be viable candidates for the HOVG. What do you think about the candidacy of each of these players? A few had careers that played into the '70s..

Parker Hall (1939 to 1942; 1946) - Cleveland Rams, San Francisco 49ers;

Babe Parilli (1952 to 1969) - Packers, Browns, Raiders, Patriots, Jets;

Tommy Thompson (1940 to 1942; 1945-1950) - Steelers & Eagles;

Eddie LaBaron (1952 to 1963) - Redskins & Cowboys;

Billy Wade (1954 to 1966) - LA Rams & Bears;

Milt Plum (1957 to 1969) - Browns, Lions, LA Rams, Giants;

Frank Ryan (1958 to 1970) - LA Rams, Browns, Redskins;

Don Meredith (1960 to 1968) - Cowboys;

Norm Snead (1961 to 1976) - Redskins, Eagles, Vikings, Giants, 49ers

I have nominated Thompson in the past. Frank Ryan is definitely worthy.

That's a great list, Matt!
Every one of those guys deserves serious consideration (imho). I might also add Craig Morton (though he lasted a little longer than most of these guys - playing into the 80's).

Of course, it always depends on who else is on the ballot but, under the right circumstances, I could see almost all of those listed eventually making our (the PFRA's) Hall.

And thank you for mentioning Parker Hall.
I really need to learn more about that guy...

Definitely Thompson, who I believe deserves HOF consideration. Like Griese, he took his team to three consecutive championship games, utilizing his best running back, while winning too and was one of the first successful T-Formation QBs ... he didnt have an Earl Morrall winning ten straight games for him as well.

I agree with Ryan also because of his TD passes and winning a championship without Paul Brown.

Great list Matt ...

Though it's tough on Plum and Meredith. They could beat the bad teams but had trouble with the good teams and Meredith, like Danny White, later for the Cowboys, was snakebit. I sure like that Meredith throwback jersey from Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, though.

I checked out Ryan. Although I couldn't find QB sack totals, but from 1963-68, except for 1967, Cleveland QBs didn't get sacked much. Ryan didn't fumble much either. Six was the highest number. Five seasons in the top 3 of TD%. Five seasons in the top 10 for lowest int%. His int% of 5.2 is better than average for that era. TDs to ints 149-111

Don Meredith without question. He was a leader. His teammates looked up to him a lot.
