Most different jersey numbers worn by the same player.

Post by Todd Pence »

Just idly wondering what the most different jersey numbers worn by the same player during his career was. I know of several players who wore three different numbers during their careers.

Andre Rison wore 6 different numbers in his career. 85 and 87 with the Colts (in the same season.) 80 with Atlanta, Cleveland and Oakland. 81 in Jacksonville, 84 in Green Bay and 89 in Kansas City.

Jeff Brady and Karl Wilson also had 6 different jersey numbers according to PFR.

There are lots of 4's as well, off the top of my head:
- Earl Morrall
- Ryan Fitzpatrick
- Josh McCown
- Percey Harvin

But Andre Rison had 5 - 80, 81, 84, 85, 89. That might be the record.

Nice - forgot about the two numbers in one season for Rison.

Shayne Graham wore eight numbers: 17, 11, 5, 8, 16, 12, 3 and 6. He played for 10 teams (which I think is a record).

According to John Maxymuk's "Packers By the Numbers" book, some familiar names wore many jersey numbers playing for the Packers:

Clarke Hinkle wore seven different numbers
Arnie Herber wore eight different numbers
Mike Michalske wore nine different numbers

A number of others wore six different numbers.

Different era as there were all pre-1942, though (Hinkle's last season was '41, Herber's last was '40, but then played two seasons with the Giants in '44 and '45, wearing a ninth number as a Giant).

And during the 1987 NFL replacement games, Packers offensive tackle Steve Collier wore a different number in each game - 92 in the first game, 70 in the second game and 74 in the final game.

Chris Chandler is an interesting case. He only wore two numbers (12 and 17), but wore each one with four different teams each (he played for the Rams in LA with #17, then in StL. with #12 ten years later.
