Re: Eras of NFL Football
I think I'd be good with 4 eras, something like "iron-man", "post-war","roughly 60s/70s", and "modern" - more than that seems like too much division.
Re: Eras of NFL Football
Great responses! I think if I were to take a stab at it, I would divide the eras up by when the play of the game noticeably changed. Clear changes to the rules that altered the game in a big way. I might go...
1920-1949: "Iron Man" Era, two-way players and a game that's hard to recognize today
1950-1977: "Golden" Era, classic gridiron football
1978-2008: "Modern" Era, passing game opens up and offenses become more balanced
2009-Present: "Madden" Era, rules designed to promote player safety (which, to me, really began with the Tom Brady Rule) help the passing game reign supreme

Re: Eras of NFL Football
This seems to make the most sense to me. I would divide the eras thusly:TodMaher wrote:David Neft, etc. in The Football Encyclopedia had:
1892-1919 "From Heffelfinger to Thorpe, Pro Football Before the NFL"
1920-1932 "Surviving With a Different Game"
1933-1945 "Divide, Bring in the Goalposts and Conquer"
1946-1959 "Beginning and Ending with Confrontation"
1960-1969 "FROM 12 to 26"
1970-1979 "Big Dollars - Big Problems"
1980-1993 "New Challenges, New Triumphs"
1892-1979: "When I wasn't watching football"
1980-present: "When I was watching football"
Re: Eras of NFL Football
1920-1931: Era of survival
1932-1945: Early days of NFL title game
1946-1969: Era of growth (two mergers, TV, becoming the national pastime, Super Bowl, etc....)
1970-1977: Ground-dominated era
1978-1992: First real era of passing
1993-2000: Early FA and expansion era
2001-Today: Corrupt era (Pats allowed to cheat, NFL caring even more about money than the game, etc...).
