Socks/knee pads question

Last Thursday Night, Giants WR Sterling Shepard didn't wear any socks/knee pads. Also, I remember seeing a couple of Steelers' defensive players with pink socks or knee pads in their previous game. I remember vividly in the 80s that Redskins K Mark Moseley had a ripped sock and the referee ordered him to change it, costing his team a time out. Also, the referees back then checked all uniform/equipment previous to the game to verify that all the players from each team had the same color-socks. Why in today's game some players "get away with it"?
