Notable SB-(or LCG)-rematches the following regular season

A notable 'one-year-later' SB-rematch that was a good game, is Peyton & Co going into CenturyLink Week #3, 2014, and bringing the very team that demolished them seven months prior into OT. An example of a bad game is a late-season '77 affair at Alameda - Raiders crushing Vikings (Tommy Kramer in-particular) yet again, 35-13.

One thing that's hardly ever happened historically as far as I know without digging things up, and that's pitting the previous year's two SB-opponents against each other opening week; or on MNF. KC@Min in '70 is the only exception that comes to mind opening week-wise along with Eagles & Cards who had themselves an opener in '48 as well; the defending-Champs prevailing, 21-14. Pats, now under Carroll, getting pounded at home to the Pack in '97, 28-10, is the only MNF game of such coming to mind.

Whether there are other openers or Monday Nighters or not, what other good or bad SB/LCG-rematches of the following regular season come to mind?

I've thought about this before. It would be the perfect Thursday night game to open the season. It currently has a 1 in 8 chance of the matchup being available to happen. (The Super Bowl champ hosting the Super Bowl loser in the following season's schedule.)

1979 Week 9: Steelers 14, Cowboys 3. The beginning of the end for Roger Staubach.

I think the NFL wanted to get some revenge on KC for winning the Super Bowl, by scheduling their first two games on the road against Minnesota and Baltimore.

As far as no-Super Bowl openers of note, the Chiefs 1972 opener (the first at Arrowhead) was against Miami, a rematch of their classic double OT from the previous December. Everyone assumed KC would get their revenge, but Miami easily handled them and began their undefeated season.

Not the most thrilling rematch, but somewhat noteworthy:

1971 Colts/Raiders. Baltimore’s only ever trip to the Oakland Coliseum. Colts won 37-14, which triggered a Raider skid that kept them out of the playoffs for the only time from 1967-1977.

Raiders were 7-1-2, lost this game then at ATL/KC

The one that jumps to mind to me was the rematch of the two AFC Champ game participants from 1981, the Chargers and Bengals. The Chargers were destroyed in the Freezer Bowl in that game but in a Monday Night rematch the following season n December 20th they showed what they could do under normal weather conditions in San Digeo whenthey rang up close to 700 yards of total offense (yes, 700!!) in routing the Bengals 50-34. Sure they had defensive issues but imagine how much fun it would have been having them play the Forty-Niners instead of the Bengals in SB XVI...

It should be noted that the Bengals and Chargers met in San Diego in the 1981 season and the Bengals won 40-17.

With the rematches from Super Bowls and Conference Championship games, do you think this is why the league introduced the Kickoff Game? Often times using such rematches as the match up: SB champ versus Conf Game opponent or SB rematch (when possible)?

It may not have been fully realized until the Jets walloped them in that 1st-Rd game at Riverfront, but the Bengals turned out to be down a peg or so from the previous year. That MNF game at the Murph is an example along with losing at Pittsburgh in Week #2, a team they had a hold on the two previous seasons.

One thing both regular season games in ’81 & ’82 have in common between Cincy & SD is the Bengals returning a long pick-six off Fouts!

3 in 4 years (They also got a pick 6 in the 79 game at Riverfront)
