Matt Hazeltine

Matt Hazeltine had a long run at linebacker for the 49ers from 1955 to 1968, then played one season with the Giants in 1970. I think he earned post-season honors in two of those years. He played before I began watching football. Is he a viable / overlooked candidate for the Hall of the Very Good? Wa...

Re: Bears set negative record

You're totally right - the Bears have indeed been a silly organization for decades now. It looks like only three coaches have left the Bears with winning records since George Halas retired - Mike Ditka, Lovie Smith, and Matt Nagy. It looks like Mike Ditka deserves more respect as a head coach than h...

Re: All-time NFL starting lineup of Penn State alumns

Good listing. Irv Pankey was a tough customer at tackle for the Los Angeles Rams, but maybe both Keith Dorney and Stew Barber were better.

Lamar Lundy (1957-69)

The Rams Fearsome Foursome has two members in the Hall of Fame and Roger Brown is in the Hall of the Very Good. I never saw him play, but does Lamar Lundy have a case for the Hall of the Very Good?

Thanks.

George Allen (Giants 1978-79)

I am reading Gary Myers's new book on the 1986 Giants and it mentions the feud between Wellington Mara and nephew Tim Mara as they searched for a coach to replace John McVay during the winter of 1978-79. Tim apparently wanted to hire George Allen, but Wellington was adamantly opposed. Does anyone kn...

Re: 2023 Obituaries

I think Lujack still holds the Bears’ record for most passing yards in a game. I think one would have to be at least 88 years old to have played for Frank Leahy at Notre Dame if Frank’s last season was ‘53?

Re: 2023 Obituaries

I think this linked obituary is for former Washington football player Bobby Wilson, a defensive tackle from Michigan State who was selected in the first round of the 1991 NFL Draft. It seems he passed away in early May 2023. https://www.paradisefuneralchapel.com/obituaries/Bobby-Wilson-Lansing?obId=...

Re: 2023 Hall of Very Good Nominations

I was a little taken aback that Herschel Walker's final season was 1997. If he started with the Generals in 1983 that makes 15 seasons - long run. I think he is the best college football player I saw from 1980 to 2022. I think Georgia only lost three times when he was in college - Clemson, Pitt and ...

I think it starts around the 5 minute mark. Sounds like the Cowboys switched the positions on their defensive line.

Re: (More) Thoughts on Super Bowl V

I think there remains a "tribute" podcast to George Young on the New York Giants website that was done when he passed away. Young was the Colts offensive line coach in 1970 and Ernie Accorsi mentions the Cowboys shrewdly "inverted" their defensive line for SB V and there was very...
