Re: So, what's the purpose of this new USFL?
Seeing as Fox has a controlling equity stake in the league, to me it's no different than the entertainment division greenlighting several episodes and paying for it. There is going to be the most direct correlation to ratings as to whether there is a second season. Or, as is the case with spring lea...

Re: Were NFL games televised the Sunday of JFK's death
Regarding the decision for CBS to not air football, it was actually decided before a decision had to be made. CBS had already committed to not breaking their live coverage until after the president's burial. I believe NBC and ABC had made the same commitment early on as well.

Re: "Rule of the Week" - Packers/Ravens & Buck/Aikman
Basically this is the illegal low block that is frequently called on changes of possession plays. It is now extended to scrimmage downs as well, but there is an exception within the tight end box. The new rule is for "low blocks," which includes roll blocks as well. We spilled a bit of dig...

Re: interesting play in Packers-Rams game (rules)
I'm surprised we missed this at Football Zebras, and there weren't many games in the late window. So, the rule on fair-catch interference with a muff is a little subjective. Let's say the returner muffs the ball and it travels 5 yards in front of him. There is no way he can finish that catch, so it'...

Re: NFL OT Rules - Possible Game-Ending Scoring Margins
Forfeit would revert to a 2-0 score (NFL rule). College has 1-0 or the score at the point of abandonment if the forfeiting team is trailing. The only thing that would be "something happens that causes forfeit" is one of the teams refuses to take the field, such as a protest. The referee is...

Re: NFL OT Rules - Possible Game-Ending Scoring Margins
You have to add the possibility that the second possession ends with an offensive safety. Let's say there is a goal-to-go with the offense trailing by 3. The defense blocks the tying field goal attempt, and picks up the loose ball past the line of scrimmage, and retreats into the end zone where the ...

Carl Madsen, a replay official and former umpire, died at 71 en route home from the Chiefs-Titans game. The last time an actively scheduled official died during the season was David Hamilton, who passed days before he was to work as an alternate official in the 1994 conference championships. https:...

Re: Wonky Merger/Realignment stuff
It appears that Denver negotiated that extra interconference game (because there were still uneven divisions) to default to them, and the NFC was determined by another method.
