Re: Stram and Ditka's stints as Saints' HC

I want to say one difference between the Hank Stram and Mike Ditka eras is that Ditka's came after Jim Finks and Jim Mora introduced professionalism into the Saints franchise? Some of that winning culture was still around.

Re: NFL "what-if" scenarios thread

I think Bill Parcells said if the Giants had selected Reggie White in the 1985 allocation of the rights to USFL players, their defense would have been declared illegal. I think they selected Hall of Fame tackle Gary Zimmerman, but he did not like New York City.

Baby Ray and Harley Sewell

With the draft one week away it's a good time to mention two outstanding players who were college scouts after their playing careers and may be solid candidates for the Hall of the Very Good. Both of their teams won a lot of games when they played. Harley Sewell had an 11 year career with the Detroi...

Re: Ernie McMillan

I think both Ernie McMillan and Bob DeMarco are prime candidates from the Cardinals for the Hall of Very Good. Ernie's son Erik was a decent Safety with the Jets for a bit in the late 1980's.

Re: Underrated "A Football Life" opportunities

Don Klosterman could cover the early Chargers, then the Kansas City Chiefs, Houston Oilers, Baltimore Colts, and Los Angeles Rams from 1960-1980.

George Young would have insight into the Colts, Dolphins, and Giants from the late sixties to the late nineties.

Good thread.

Re: Chicago Bears Quarterbacks

I read a crazy stat in today's Chicago Sun-Times and was reminded of this thread.

C.J. Stroud has passed for 2,626 yards this season, with 15 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. This is more passing yards than any Bears quarterback has ever thrown in any nine-game stretch.

Matt Hazeltine

Matt Hazeltine had a long run at linebacker for the 49ers from 1955 to 1968, then played one season with the Giants in 1970. I think he earned post-season honors in two of those years. He played before I began watching football. Is he a viable / overlooked candidate for the Hall of the Very Good? Wa...

Re: Bears set negative record

You're totally right - the Bears have indeed been a silly organization for decades now. It looks like only three coaches have left the Bears with winning records since George Halas retired - Mike Ditka, Lovie Smith, and Matt Nagy. It looks like Mike Ditka deserves more respect as a head coach than h...
