Re: 1984 Niners - 'paper champion' greatest team?

Our posts were in response to your statement that the Eagles were "done" in 1950; their records for the rest of the decade are irrelevant to 1950. Had you said they were done in 1951 or some time thereafter, I would probably agree. My contention, and Saban's, too, though he can obviously s...

Re: 1984 Niners - 'paper champion' greatest team?

While it's true the Eagles were not quite as good in 1950 as in 1949, I think Saban hit the nail on the head with his points: without the merger, the Eagles would have been far and away the best team in the East in 1950. They lost two games to the Browns and they lost twice to a Giants team that add...

Jack Whitaker Tribute

Eagle One posted on the obituary page that Jack Whitaker passed away Sunday at 95. I'm biased because I grew up in the New York area in the 1960s when Whitaker was doing Giants games on CBS-TV but I put him in the pantheon of all-time pro football broadcasters, along with Ray Scott and Pat Summerall...

Re: All-Decade teams seem to be "gold standard"

I'd say it's worth contacting as many of the selectors as anyone has time to contact. Identifying oneself as a member of the PFRA would help and anyone who has published in The Coffin Corner should mention that. As Ken said, be polite. Since there seems to be some momentum behind prioritizing player...

Re: Makeup class of 17

This has been a really fun discussion to follow. If I'm not mistaken, the previous discussion about the strength of the AAFC relative to the NFL that Tanks and Spartans referred to some posts ago was a lot of us going head to head with Clark Heins, Reaser's old friend (where oh where did poor Clarki...

Turney in the News/Better Late than Never

So I'm sitting in the waiting room while my father is getting checked out by his cardiologist, with nary a magazine from the last six months in sight, when I finally resign myself to the July 24, 2017 Sports Illustrated and an article speculating whether the Cubs will be the first team in 17 years t...

Sorry, in my most recent post, the first paragraph is a portion of Jeremy's post from Monday night and the following three paragraphs are mine.

Re: Belichick, Brady and the New England Patriots

I think I said in an earlier post that Paul Brown was playing chess when the other coaches were playing checkers. But I'm not sure that it isn't the same with Belichick. It's just that it's not so obvious to people not in the room exactly what his chess game consists of. We know what Brown did - tax...

Re: Belichick, Brady and the New England Patriots

Definitely a complicated question. On the surface, I think most people’s immediate reaction is Yes, it’ more difficult to accomplish something when competing against 31 others than 11 others. Another way to look at it, though, is to imagine Usain Bolt in a race made up of the 32 fastest 100-meter sp...
