Re: Winston Hill

Yes, they're meeting Wednesday and Thursday. Hopefully they'll decide on the players Wednesday and the others Thursday. I'm much more interested in the players.

Maybe you can tap some of your secret sources, John, and get updates as they go along. No need to wait til the weekend.

Re: Winston Hill

He's definitely not one of the ten best among the 20 finalists. Hopefully they won't feel obligated to include him simply because he's the only one on the list who played in the AFL.

Re: Class of 2020 Centennial Hall of Fame Finalists

Bill Forester deserves a mention at OLB for the 1960s team. He only played four seasons in the decade but he earned a lot of honors in those four seasons. He's another good example, like Jim Ray Smith and Jimmy Patton, of a guy whose career is divided between two decades and thus missed out on all-d...

Re: Class of 2020 Centennial Hall of Fame Finalists

I'd be interested in your thoughts, John, but I think Howley was more deserving of one of the OLB spots for the 1960s team than Robinson. Robinson to me is a classic example of a guy who got an all decade honor he really didn't deserve and then that all-decade selection went a long way in the case t...

Re: Class of 2020 Centennial Hall of Fame Finalists

Agree completely on those points about the decade teams. You would think people who spend as much time paying attention to football as these selectors do would be able to see there have been plenty of mistakes made, plus there's the whole Jim Ray Smith thing that you mention. You started it on your ...

Re: Class of 2020 Centennial Hall of Fame Finalists

By my count, 13 of the finalists made an all-decade team: Carmichael, Covert, Craig, Dilweg, Emerson, Harris, Isbell, Karras, Nobis, Pearson, Speedie, Sprinkle and Wistert. The 7 who did not are Branch, Dillon, Gradishar, Hill, Lewellen, Shell and Slater.

Just checked the HOF website and it says the final vote is in January, with the results announced a few days later.

Re: Finalists for Hall of Fame's centennial class revealed

I wouldn't choose anyone who played after the Hall of Fame was founded, because they've all had their chance with the selection committee. Many of the players from before the 1960s, though, never really had that chance. There are nine finalists whose careers ended before 1960: Dillon, Dilweg, Emers...

Re: Coffin Corner - Bears Issue

Thanks for the nice words and glad you liked the article. One piece of it that I thought might elicit some discussion is the claim that none of a group of other teams -- the 1967-75 Raiders, the 1969-76 Vikings, the 1967-79 Rams and the 1948-60 Forty-Niners (and perhaps others I missed) -- match the...
