Re: COWBOYS vs Bengals SBXVI at Pontiac, 1/24/82
Yeah, I totally feel for Lewis Billips....the Mike Torrez of football? Sad to see a good career remembered for something like that...... Winning championships -- gotta have a great team but it does take a little luck as well.... What really always made me wonder about the Bengals in 23 and if they w...

Re: What in the world was up with Johnny Lujack?
I thankfully got to interview Mr. Lujack for The Game Before the Money: Voices of the Men Who Built the NFL oral history book. In regards to leaving pro football after 1951, he told me that Notre Dame's head coach Frank Leahy asked him to be an assistant. Lujack felt that was a great way to pay back...

Don Meredith without question. He was a leader. His teammates looked up to him a lot.

Re: John Elway
I think Elway could have taken any team he played on to the SB. He would have elevated talent around him. Agree 100%. You trade Kosar for Elway and the Browns go to 3 Super Bowls....You put Elway on Minnesota with Herschel Walker and Anthony Carter and Steve Jordan -- they likely would have made a ...

Re: Leon Gray and Jim Lachey - HOVG?
I've heard players say that Leon Gray was the best offensive lineman they ever played against....that's good enough for me....and his teammate John Hannah thought a lot of him, too....I think he was really angry when Gray was traded..."this team doesn't want to win" -- I think he said some...

Re: Gary Clark
Gary Clark was fantastic. I think he's borderline HOF. He always seemed to make tough 3rd and 4th quarter plays.

Re: COWBOYS vs Bengals SBXVI at Pontiac, 1/24/82
Impossible to say. Tony Hill and Drew Pearson might have been a tough matchup for that Bengals secondary. I always thought the Bengals that played the 49ers a few years later were much better although admittedly I wasn't able to watch very many of their regular season games.

Re: Was 1977 the most referee-affected season ever?
And I think both of those were after Bill Walsh left, correct? Anderson kind of slips under a lot of people's radar if they aren't old enough to remember him play. Tough losses. The Oilers came close to beating the Steelers, too, in 78 and 79, but it just goes to show how tough that AFC Central was ...

Re: Was 1977 the most referee-affected season ever?
The Oilers recovered a fumbled kickoff in the end zone and it should have been a game-winning touchdown but it was incorrectly ruled a non-fumble. I think Rozelle even admitted the officiating error. The Oilers lost in overtime.... That happened in October....then the Oilers beat Cincinnati late in ...
