George Perles

George Perles, former head coach of Michigan State, and Chuck Noll's D-line coach and eventually DC passed away at age of 85. Article says he created the stunt 4-3 but I thought that was Joe Greene. Probably a collaborative effort. If anybody has an answer post it please. https://www.freep.com/story...

Re: Troy Polamalu VS Ed Reed

"Box safety" is not a negative term. It often denotes that the player cannot play deep (lacks speed) and that his skills are suited to play the run or cover short zones or a TE (rather than a wide receiver) The great safeties could do both, Ed Reed played some SS, DOnnie SHell could play ...

Re: CB and S for NFL 100

Herb Adderley Willie Wood I've been watching a lot of 1960's Packers games, and I wanted to weigh in on these two guys. They both stand out on film, especially Wood. They were both smart, sure tacklers, and covered a lot of ground. I think you could make a case that Adderley was the best CB in hist...

Re: George Ratterman, 1953-56

George Ratterman was known as quite a practical joker. While playing for the AAFC All-Star team in 1949 before a game against the Cleveland Browns, he called the Browns up on the telephone and told someone that their practice was cancelled for that day. It almost worked until assistant coach Blanto...

Re: Which was worse, 1982 or 1987?

Though not as many as '82, many games were missed out that very season as well. Whether it's scab games that you wish would have not been scab games, or whether it's the very original Wk #3 matchups that were outright cancelled - Broncos@Browns MNF being the main one coming to mind! As for notable ...

Re: '84, Week #11: Eagles 23, Dolphins 24

I remember well this game as it was an NFL Game of the Week and I recorded it when it aired on ESPN, as I was traveling the previous Sunday and didn't watch any game. THe thing I most remember was the Melvin Hoover TD, as he ran between the Dolphins defense and when he scored an angry policeman out...

Re: '84, Week #11: Eagles 23, Dolphins 24

1984 Dolphins were a very strange team. Their division was really bad, their schedule was really easy, and so much of starting 11-0 was just Marino shredding defenses. I remember Betters blocking that XP was a 'signature moment', but Miami's defense was pretty bad, especially after AJ Duhe went dow...

Re: Some good stuff coming from NFL Network

I know the NFL Network has been a source of frustration for many of us for their lack of historical content, but I'm personally looking forward to somehow finding a way to watch as much as I can of some of the "NFL 100" content they have planned. Of course, having cut the cord to cable ma...
