Re: 2019 Obituaries

https://lionswire.usatoday.com/2019/12/21/ex-lions-safety-jimmy-spiderman-allen-has-passed-away/ Jimmy "Spiderman" Allen, who was a member of the Pittsburgh Steeler's stellar 1974 draft class and played with the Steelers and Lions, passed away earlier this week. I found a clip of Jimmy Al...

Re: Notable 'last-game-of-regular-season' MNF games

Why wouldn’t Min@Dal have been a MNF game in ’82 if not for the strike? Buffalo at Miami was scheduled to be the Week 16 MNF game for the 1982 season, but because of the strike, an extra week was added to the end of the season and the original Week 16 actually became Week 8 in the strike-shortened ...

Re: Notable 'last-game-of-regular-season' MNF games

The 1984 game had no drama attached since the Cowboys had been eliminated from the playoffs (first time since 74) and the Dolphins had clinched the best record in the AFC. Still, the final three minutes were wild: Mark Clayton's 39-yard TD pass with 2:31 left makes it 21-14 Miami; Tony Hill grabs a...

Re: 'Common opponents' gets nod over 'better conference reco

The one tiebreaker that I've never understood why the NFL has never used is "Better record against .500-or-better teams". I always thought that would be a better tiebreaker, especially for determining quality playoff teams, in how a team does against other average or better teams.

QB's taking 5-yard snap on all plays - when?

I know they do it all now on virtually all plays these days, taking the snap about five yards back from center, but it's not quite as deep as a shotgun which was closer to seven yards deep, and the two running backs behind the QB would move up in the pocket. You rarely see the QB set up directly beh...

Re: Notable 'last-game-of-regular-season' MNF games

The final MNF of the 1978 season was notable when the news broke just before the start of the Patriots-Dolphins game that Patriots coach Chuck Fairbanks was leaving the Patriots to coach the University of Colorado. He was not on the sidelines that night, replaced by co-coaches Ron Erhardt and Hank B...

Re: NFL 100 All Time Team QB's

In 1991, it would be fair to say he was a BUST as the #1 pick in 83, yeah, I said it. I don't think any pro football fan who watched Elway from 1983-91 felt he was a bust after leading the Broncos to three Super Bowls in four seasons. Granted in two of those Super Bowls, (Giants and 49ers), they we...

Re: NFL 100 All Time Team QB's

Just a note: Elway may have carried the 1986 and 1987 teams on his back, but the 1989 Broncos had the best defense in the league. They were third in yards, second in turnovers, and #1 in points, first downs, and touchdown passes. It's easy to forget after the shellacking in the Super Bowl, but that...

Re: Finalists for Hall of Fame's centennial class revealed

Looks like the list is out. I saw it on another board: http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000001089634/article/finalists-for-hall-of-fames-centennial-class-revealed COACHES (8 FINALISTS) - Coaches who last coached more than five seasons ago Don Coryell - 1973-77 St. Louis Cardinals, 1978-1986 San Di...

Re: NFL 100 All Time Team QB's

I'm thinking the final ten are: Unitas, Baugh, Graham, Montana, Brady, Manning, Marino, Brees, Starr, and Staubach. If I had one more spot after that I'd probably put Van Brocklin on there. Or maybe Dawson. I would go with Elway instead of Marino. Elway basically carried three teams on his back to ...
