Re: Last 2 way player?

That might be it, depending on your definition. Several defensive players have come in on goal line offense, like J.J. Watt and Dontari Poe. Two defensive backs saw action in the regular offense, but very little. Marcus Jones saw 18 offensive snaps for the 2022 Patriots, and caught 4 passed for 69 y...

Re: Choosing a Senior Preliminary List For The HOF

It looks like someone was asleep at the switch. Sean Landeta was originally listed one the list of 183 Senior preliminary nominees. The only problem is that to be eligible a Senior, a player must have played no later than the 1999 season. Landeta played until 2005. The revised page now lists 182 nom...

Re: Two seasons that stood out to me

I could see the NFC being considered very down in 1999. The three teams that were responsible for all but one NFC Championship Game appearances from 1992-1997 (49ers, Cowboys and Packers) were all worse. 49ers showed their age and went 4-12, Cowboys made the playoffs with an 8-8 season and the Pack...

Re: Your Unpopular Football Opinions

Wow, uh, I don't think this opinion is shared by a lot of people. I think a lot more knowledgeable people would share that opinion than the opinion that the 1996 Packers are one of the two worst Super Bowl winners of all time. I think the majority of people on here (lurkers and posters alike) would...

Re: 1994 Steelers vs. 1997 Steelers

Oh please. 97 KC was a fraud. How that team went 13-3 with the 4th best roster in their own division is beyond me. OAK/SEA had better players yet the Chiefs got by on Marty smoke and mirrors luck. Horrible running game, Grbac and Gannon, only 1 WR worth a damn (washed up Andre Rison) KC was the wea...

Re: Is the following record unbreakable?

Is it known roughly when teams began punting for purposes like what we are used to seeing in more recent decades? It was a gradual process, without an obvious break, but I'd say the change took place from maybe 1933-48 or so -- and especially during the 1940s, as more and more teams switched from t...

Re: "Deacon" on back of Deacon Jones's jersey

I found the video. Frank Gifford has called him "Dave Jones" four times by the end of the first drive. You can actually hear the stadium announcer saying "tackle made by Deacon Jones," after he tackled Larry Brown. Othe next drive, Deacon jumped offsides, and Gifford again called...

As I recall, I really liked John Turney's team, and was not particularly enthusiastic about Team Fouts..

Re: Radical draft picks/trades in retrospect...thoughts on who "won"?

Nobody really won that Ricky Williams deal, especially since he would be off to Miami in a few years. As for Janikowski, it's not surprising that Al Davis did that, but there were rumors at the time that he could have been deported, so it was a risk. Washington wound up with Champ Bailey (after usi...

Re: Worst draft classes for a team

Though he contributed to championship teams and made the HOF, Bobby Beathard had some horrible drafts for the Chargers, before he left in 2000. Gil Brandt made the HOF for Dallas but had bad drafts during the 80s. If these guys can make it, why not Jack Vainisi or Don Klosterman? First Round Recap ...
