Re: When early semi-pro teams became professional
If a franchise paid a league's franchise fee (NFL, AFL, AAFC, etc) it would be a league member and thus be a professional team. Some franchises that joined the NFL in the early years had been playing in other, lesser-known, leagues before jumping to the big league. We have a tendency to call any tea...

Re: So, what's the purpose of this new USFL?
My wife and I attended the USFL championship game in Canton. Had a great time. The game was competitive and several players sort of jumped out at you. Maybe a few will get shots to play in the NFL. Even if not many do, I enjoyed watching the league all season and I hope it will be back next year. So...

Re: Two Pro Leagues in the same Season
I do recall someone who played an NFL Fall, the following USFL Spring and then the subsequent NFL Fall, but cannot recall who? Any other similar CFL examples come to mind? As for the CFL, I remember many Canadian punters (Ken Clark, Zenon Andrusyshyn, Hank Ilesic) who came to the NFL for a year, th...

Re: Greatest Season of the ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s
For the 1960s, I concur about 1969. The Jets beat the Colts in SB3 to end the 1968 season. The 1969 season reaped the benefits of all the arguing about league equality. That generated a lot of newspaper copy. The Jets generated a lot of interest, to the top TV market in the country tuned in to watch...

Re: NEW USFL
I've enjoyed watching the games and I hope the league is around for more seasons. It will be interesting to see if the teams start playing in their city of listing next season.
Bought tix for the championship game in Canton. Should be a lot of fun.

Re: 1960 NFL emergent expansion plan
I just came across a tidbit of information that I had not known before. When George Halas and the NFL reacted to the formation of the AFL, the initial expansion plan was to award franchises to Clint Murchison of Dallas and Craig Cullinan of Houston for the 1960 season. There was no thought of expan...

Re: School me on the 1963 Chicago Bears
The Bears were 20-6-2 between 1962 and '63. The Bears were more solid than spectacular on offense in those seasons. Billy Wade was the QB, a veteran who threw interceptions. They had Willie Galimore at running back in '63 but he died in an auto accident during training camp before the '64 season. Th...

Let's not forget Bo Jackson, who rotated between MLB and in the NFL.

Re: Standouts who played other sports in college
I can't name too many who did not play college football but DID play other sports. The best I can do is below: Otto Graham played basketball and football in college. He was on a championship pro basketball team as well. Weeb Ewbank played college baseball and football. Sammy Baugh played college bas...
