Re: Top 10 NFL Books
For what it is worth: , I'd start with Total Football II. Its a very in-depth look at professional football, an important research source. Warning: This is a huge, heavy book. Papa Bear by Jeff Davis covers George Halas, which makes it the story of the NFL. Good read, too. Instant Replay, Jerry Kram...

Re: Chicago Bears Quarterbacks
Interesting question. I suppose you have to set parameters for determining what constitutes a franchise QB. Luckman, of course, has to head the list. The Bears had Blanda but they didn't use him much. He could have become the kind of player you mean, I think. Billy Wade was the championship QB in 19...

Re: 2021 PFRA CONVENTION UPDATE
Do you guys ever have your convention someplace west of the Mississippi? When I was on the Board we discussed a lot of different cities for conventions. The choice of Canton for this convention -- which was supposed to be held last year -- was pretty logical, given the 100-year observation. A lot o...

Re: Marty Schottenheimer passes away
I was sorry to hear of his passing, even though it was expected after he went into hospice care. He was an outstanding coach.

Re: Dick Vermeil HOF worthy?
If you look at his entire career, Dick Vermeil deserves Hall of Famer recognition. First NFL assistant whose only job was the kicking game. Head coached 3 franchises into the playoffs. Coached in 2 Super Bowls and won 1. His won-loss numbers show that he rebuilt losers into winners. 120-109 overall,...

Re: How replaceable are elite RBs, really?
Interesting to note that in 1966 Tom Moore caught 60 passes for the Rams, which I think was a single-season record for running backs at the time. Moore didn't get many carries, Dick Bass was the leading rusher for that team. Moore was near the end of his career at that time. He had spent much of his...

Re: How replaceable are elite RBs, really?
A truly elite back is hard to replace. But an elite offensive line makes it easier.

Re: Is it time to consider a second, digital-only PFRA pub?
When I was on the Board, this topic came up and was discussed two times that I remember. I strongly support retaining the paper version for all of the reasons Ken Crippen mentioned in his reply on this string and for another reason as well. The quality of the writing improves when authors understand...

Re: Passing yards becoming a meaningless stat?
Bad teams are usually behind in games, so they have to pass more. OBs for those teams tend to build up the yardage, if not the points. Better teams have something closer to a balance between rushing yards and passing (although in today's football, everyone throws the ball around the yard a lot). So ...
