Re: Rupert's Book

When you get right down to it, a dynasty or an era is wholly subjective. I'm sure Rupert's formula will work for some and not for others. When it comes to dynasties and Hall of Famers, I figure it's like pornography---you know it when you see it.

Re: 1940 Lions-Cardinals

From the AP game account (Detroit Free Press, 9/16/40): "But by the third quarter, both teams were so water-logged the contest devolved into a punting duel between [Whizzer] White and the Cardinals' Beryl Clark, ex-Oklhoma ace. The final period saw eight successive exchanges of punts between th...

Re: 1940 Lions-Cardinals

I found it interesting that both teams matched first downs and turnovers: Detroit had 5 FD and 5 TO, and Cards had 2 of each. The game was played in Buffalo, a neutral site. I can't imagine there were too many die-hard Detroit or Cardinals fans in Buffalo. I wonder how many sat through to the end? I...

Re: thoughts on source notation for a book

I think for the book you're describing, creative nonfiction might be the way to go. Gives you plenty of latitude to build your characters. As long as a writer is up-front about his approach, readers don't care. They just want an informed, flowing narrative that's fun to read and leaves them with fee...

Re: Would-Be Dynasties

When it comes to dynasties, it seems to help a lot if there's a superstar HC/QB combo. You think of the 1946-55 Browns and you automatically think of Paul Brown/Otto Graham. Same with GB (Lombardi/Starr), NE (Belichick/Brady), Pitts (Noll/Bradshaw), some others. Can't use the same kind of shorthand ...

Re: Would-Be Dynasties

Here's a question: would you consider the 1982-1991 Redskins to be a dynasty? In each of their three championships during that span they had a different QB and a different leading rusher. Do you feel the personnel core needs to remain intact and win together to establish a dynasty? Not necessarily,...

Re: Would-Be Dynasties
The 1967-75 Raiders might have something to say about that, unless their subsequent title takes them out of the running. ~.780 win percentage; seven league/conference championship appearances -- and in all seven cases, the team that eliminated them won the Super Bowl.
You beat me to...

Re: Would-Be Dynasties

I don’t consider the 90s Cowboys a dynasty. Their window of dominance wasn’t long enough to fit my definition. I don't know about that. Four straight NFC title game appearances and 3 Super Bowls in 4 years sounds pretty good to me. Of course I'm in Detroit :D Here in Motown we consider the Lions' 4...

Re: What happened to the '64 Bears defense?

I remember when I first heard about that incident as a kid, I thought Babe Parilli has been killed. I was a big AFL fan.
