Re: Anything like WAR for football players?
As much as I enjoy research, I've always been far more interested in the personalities and social issues of sports than drilling too deep into stats. WAR, analytics, etc. just don't get my blood pumping. My feelings are best summed up with a quote by NYT columnist Russell Baker some 40 or 50 years a...

Re: Is it time to consider a second, digital-only PFRA pub?
My background is very similar. As much as I love paper,I also have wondered why we just don't go to an entirely digital CC. It makes sense in so many ways, most importantly the ability to have no real limit on content and the opportunity to save printing & mailing costs. The money saved could be...

Re: 1933 Cards v. Redskins game
All I could find was this piece from website fenwayparkdiary.com. Seems the Skins really dominated the action, in part because the Cards often chose to punt on second down. October 22, 1933 ... In a game that packed all the points into the second period, and most of the thrills in the final minutes,...

Re: Why Chuck Crist retired so early?
From what I could gather, SF waived him in mid-August 1979. Either nobody claimed him and he retired or he was too settled in the area to want to move again. Crist, who never played football in college, always marched to his own fight song, anyway.

Re: 2020 Obituaries
Oh man, now Jimmy Orr?? My faves from the '60s are dropping like flies. Orrsville was a long way from Detroit, but those Colts were my favorites growing up. RIP Jimmy. One of the staples of pro football in the 60's was Johnny Unitas throwing a TD pass to Jimmy Orr in Orr's Corner. And we'll always ...

Re: Passing yards becoming a meaningless stat?
One of the biggest beefs I've had with the NFL over the last 20 years is the way rule changes have turned the game into basketball-on-turf. Seems like everybody and their mother routinely throws for 5,000 yards, 30+ TD passes, 70% completion pct., etc. Given a decent O-line and a standard set of rec...
