Re: Larry Brooks

Thank you of informing me of those links.

Was just curious because I thought you implied that the ballot for 2024 had been released, and I haven't sent my suggestions in yet.

Was told it would be a little later in the year.

Re: Seniors

Someone else can totally prove me wrong but he was good, very good, but I have seen players without the so-called "alls" who IMO were dominant and players without the "numbers" who looked dominant ... not a ton of them but I have also seen guys with a good HOF resume--the number...

Aspects of the game that don't show up on a stat sheet

There are a few aspects of the game that I don't see anyone typically bring up when talking about players. To name a few: 1. I have lost track of how many times I have seen tight ends evaluated solely based off their receiving statistics with no acknowledgement of how well they can block. 2. I typic...

Re: Ranking all NFLCG winners, '33 thru '65

Not a bad list. The top two in particular are probably the two of the very best teams in the history of the league before the Super Bowl. The only one that feels a bit off in my opinion is the 1936 Packers; they could be higher. If the AAFC champions are included, then the 1946 and 48 Browns would a...

Re: Larry Brooks

5 Pro Bowls. 2 AP nods. Comparable to Smerlas (already in HOVG.) I would pick him over Antwine, who is on the ballot. Brooks had great sack totals. But are people burned out on Rams defensive line? This is probably going to sound like a boneheaded question but you say Antwine is on the ballot. Wher...

Re: A question about NFL Recordkeeping

First, Eric wanted me to give his email to you: aegoska@sbcglobal.net Also, Ralph's quote from Johnny Blood about Lewellen's punting was pretty much a universal opinion. Arthur Daley of The New York Times started covering the NFL in the early 1920s and wrote as late as Ray Guy's time that he never ...

Re: A question about NFL Recordkeeping

I asked Eric Goska if he had any numbers that might help you, and I'll post them here. First, if Eric is right about what you might be looking for, he's also correct in what he states about pre-1933 punting stats. Punting had little to do with the opposing team's defense. It was all about gaining a...

Re: A question about NFL Recordkeeping

It's a fascinating question and one that David Neft, who I believe belongs on the Mount Rushmore of pro football historians, and Eric Goska, the preeminent authority on Packers statistics, have researched about as thoroughly possible based on old newspaper play-by-plays, none of which were more tho...

Re: A question about NFL Recordkeeping

Final word: The 1977 Bears Media Guide notes that "Complete seasonal (punting) statistics began in 1939, although frequently during the period 1933-1938 individual and/or team punting totals are listed on official score blanks. Such game totals are included as official records, where applicabl...

A question about NFL Recordkeeping

Hello,

Out of curiosity, does anyone know where to go to find out how many times teams punted on offense, and how many times their defenses forced punts on defense? Specifically before the 1941 season (the earliest one with such totals on pro football reference).
